Human remains found at home of deceased Casco man

May 10—Relatives cleaning out their deceased father's Casco home this weekend called police when they discovered skeletal remains in an outbuilding on the property, police said Monday.

The discovery took place shortly before 3:26 p.m. Saturday on Poland Spring Road at the home of Douglas Scott, who died this year at the age of 82, state police said in a statement. A relative called 911 to report the remains, and detectives with the State Police and the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department are investigating.

Shannon Moss, spokeswoman for state police, said the remains were in a shed on the property.

The remains were examined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Sunday morning, but further tests are pending that may help determine the identity of the person and what killed them.

"Detectives, deputies and troopers worked over the weekend investigating the circumstances surrounding this discovery," state police said in a statement. "Detectives and Deputies continue interviewing witnesses and other persons of interest at this time."

Police said they do not believe there is any threat to the public.
