Hudson boys, Twinsburg girls win titles at Division I district track and field meet

TRACK AND FIELD

Nordonia Division I District

The results from Nordonia on Friday night had a similar feel to the Suburban League National Conference meet the previous week.

This time, Hudson edge Stow for the team title 95-93 after the Bulldogs nipped Hudson by .5 points at the league meet.

In the girls team race, Twinsburg won the title more comfortably. The Tigers finished with 117.1 points and Hudson was second with 104.

Hudson won the boys title with two individual victories and a lot of depth. Blake Toth won the shot put with a throw of 52 feet, 8 inches and Titan Casey won the 800-meter run in 1:54.59.

Stow sprinting star Xavier Preston won three events. He took the 100-meter dash (10.94 seconds), 200 (22.30) and anchored Stow's winning 800 relay (1:27.34)

Senior Luke Ondracek led Walsh Jesuit to a third-place finish (88 points), as he pulled out the "distance double", winning the 1,600 in 4:22.61 and the 3,200 in 9:33.19,

Twinsburg girls coach Sara Kmet was pleased to see Twinsburg sweep the relay events Friday. The Tigers won the 400 relay in 48.79 seconds, the 800 relay in 1:42.93 and the 1,600 relay in 4:01.23.

Twinsburg also swept the 400, as senior Sophie Bessett won the girls race in 57.5 seconds and Logan Doyle won the boys race in 48.9 seconds.

Hudson got individual titles from all over the team, beginning with 100 hurdles champion Klaudia Kosa (15.25). Senior Story Jones then cruised to a win in the 1,600 (5:26.83). Grace Merrick completed her double in the throwing events, as she won the discus with a toss of 122 feet, 9 inches.

Stow sophomore Jayla Atkinson appears to be healthy again. She won the 800-meter run in 2:15.93, just ahead of teammate Kendra Cassidy (2:17:63).

North Canton Hoover Division I District

Sofia Istnick won the 1,600 and 3,200 to help the Jackson girls team win their 12th district team title. It will be the final one for coach Rick Neitzelt, who is retiring at the end of the season after 47 years as the Polar Bears coach and 52 years overall of teaching and coaching at Jackson High School.

Istnick and teammate Kailey Zagst combined for 36 points in the 1,600 and 3,200. Zagst was runner-up in both races. Leena Patibandla won Jackson's other district titles in the high jump and discus.

Layne Studer led GlenOak to the boys team title with a first-place finish in the pole vault in a school-record 15 feet, 1.75 inches.

SOFTBALL

Field 12, Norton 4

Field (22-3, 13-0) clinched the Metro Athletic Conference championship in a matchup of Division II district championship teams that will head to a different location for a regional semifinal.

Field's leading hitters were Sarah Rufener (two doubles, triple); Maddie Burge (two doubles); Devon Carpenter (double, triple); Kailyn Gressman (double) and Megan Schmidt (double).

BASEBALL

CVCA 10, Field 0

Sophomore Joey Lehner (4-0) pitched three shutout innings and CVCA (25-2) totaled 10 hits to earn a win over Field (20-6).

CVCA's leading hitters were seniors Tyler Wise (two singles, double, two runs, three RBIs) and Andrew Hendrickx (double, two RBIs) and juniors Trevor Vojtkofsky (single, two RBIs) and Otto Rogers (two singles, two runs).

Lake 5, West Branch 3 

Landon Woods went 2-for-3 with a run scored and pitched three shutout innings to lead visiting Lake (16-10) past West Branch (17-10). Lake's Logan Brady and Mason Champagne also had two hits.

Marlington 8, Walsh Jesuit 7 

Ben Yoder hit a walk-off two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the host Dukes (19-4) to a win over the Warriors (19-5).

Marlington's Caden Bates went 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs and Tommy Skelding went 2-for-4 with a run.

Walsh's Joey Canzoni hit a solo home run and a two-run double and scored two runs. John Simecek collected three hits and Henry Kaczmar contributed two doubles and two RBIs.

Louisville 16, Berlin Hiland 4 

Charlie Roberts went 4-for-4 with four runs and an RBI for the Leopards (19-9). Louisville's Karson Siegfried had two hits and five RBIs, Connor Adelman had two hits — including a home run — and two RBIs and three runs and Zack Seaman smacked a grand slam. 

Green 8, Cuyahoga Falls 4 

Jacob Rollyson and Andrew Elliott both went 2-for-3 to lead Green (13-9) past Falls (3-17).

Archbishop Hoban 11, Kenston 2

Seniors Shawn Parnell and Nolan Holmgren each hit a home run to lead the visiting Knights to a regular season win.

Parnell also hit a double, scored two runs and had five RBIs. His contributions extended to the mound as he pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

Holmgren, Nate Shimmel and Andrew Karhoff had two RBIs apiece. Shimmel also scored two runs. Hoban's Zachary Zimmerman hit two doubles and scored two runs.
