HS WRESTLING: District 2 team championship matchups set

Mar. 4—The District 2 committee established the team dual wrestling format.

Instead of eight-team tournaments for Class 2A and 3A, each class will hold a championship match March 17 between the top two team finishers at the District 2 individual tournaments.

In Class 2A, District 2 team champion Lackawanna Trail will host second-place finisher Lake-Lehman, while team champion Delaware Valley hosts runner-up Abington Heights in Class 3A.

"It is disappointing not to have a more traditional eight-team dual tournament, but under the circumstances the committee believes this is the best way to move forward this year," District 2 wrestling committee chairman Jay Starnes said in an email. "We are hopeful for a return to a more traditional format in the 2021-22 season."

The title matches can have spectators, and the four schools will coordinate tickets.

Lackawanna Trail (7-0) captured its second straight Lackawanna League Division II crown this year and claimed the District 2 Class 2A team title Feb. 21 by 87 points over Lake-Lehman. The Black Knights went 8-0 overall this season and 5-0 in Wyoming Valley Conference Division II matches for the league championship.

Delaware Valley went 7-0 this season and 4-0 in Lackawanna League Division I matches. The Warriors won the District 2 Class 3A team championship Feb. 20 by 7 1/2 points over Abington Heights. The Comets went 8-1 and 4-1 in Lackawanna League Division I matches, losing only to Delaware Valley, 33-27, on Jan. 29.

The winners will represent District 2 at the Class 2A and 3A state tournaments, which start March 22 at a site to be announced.
