HS FOOTBALL: Tri-Valley stays unbeaten

Sep. 25—HEGINS — Layne Yoder made the play of the game.

Then the Tri-Valley special teams made an even bigger one.

Yoder broke a third-quarter tie with a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown and the Dawgs blocked a potential game-tying conversion kick later in the frame as Tri-Valley edged Executive Education Charter 19-18 in a non-league football game Friday night.

The teams traded scores for most of the game, with Darmel Lopez throwing a pair of touchdown passes for Executive Education (3-2) and Noah Porter and Jacob Scheib scoring on touchdowns runs for Tri-Valley (5-0).

With the game tied at 12 in the third quarter, Yoder picked off a Lopez pass and took it to the house to put Tri-Valley up 19-12 with 3:19 left in the frame.

Executive Education answered on its next possession, with Lopez hitting Young for a 29-yard TD pass with 1:25 left in the third. The kick was blocked, keeping the Dawgs up 19-18.

Tri-Valley drove deep into Raptors territory in the fourth quarter but came up empty. Scheib had a big sack on one possession for Tri-Valley before the Dawgs recovered a fumble in the game's final minute to seal the win.

Loyalsock 35 Williams Valley 29

WILLIAMSTOWN — Davion Hill scored three touchdowns as the Lancers built a big first-half lead and then fought off a spirited Vikings comeback in the second half to record the victory at Gerry Stauffenberg Field at Viking Stadium.

Hill and Tyler Gee scored in the first quarter and Loyalsock (4-1) used a pair of second-quarter scores to go up 27-0.

Williams Valley (3-2) stormed back, slicing the lead to 27-6 at intermission on Logan Williard's 1-yard run, then using a pair of Alex Achenbach TD runs and two-point conversion passes to Brady Evans to make it 27-22 late in the third quarter.

Hill's third TD run gave Loyalsock some cushion, but Achenbach scored on a 45-yard pass from Isaac Whiteash with 3:39 left. The Vikings got the ball back with 23 seconds left and had a chance to tie or win the game, but an interception ended the comeback.

Tamaqua 52 Salisbury 0

TAMAQUA — Bradley Whalen rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns as Tamaqua routed Salisbury in a Schuylkill/Colonial Red Division game.

Isaac Curvey rushed for TDs of 1, 2 and 32 yards and added a two-point conversion run. Connor Dillon had a 12-yard TD run and two two-point conversion runs, while Colton Tomczak had a 73-yard touchdown run and two conversion runs for the Blue Raiders (2-3, 1-2 Red).

Tamaqua's defense allowed just 94 total yards (69 rushing, 25 passing).

Hamburg 42 Kutztown 7

HAMBURG — Xander Menapace completed 17-of-23 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns as the Hawks remained unbeaten with a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 5 victory over the Cougars.

Menapace completed TD throws of 14 yards to Mason Semmel, 62 yards to Cohen Correll and 29 yards to Ty Werley. Correll finished with nine receptions for 154 yards.

Pierce Mason rushed for 119 yards and two scores as Hamburg (5-0, 2-0 L-L) built a 28-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

Mount Carmel 42 Bloomsburg 7

BLOOMSBURG — Xavier Diaz paced a rushing attack that gained 262 yards by running for 81 yards and a touchdown as the Red Tornadoes improved to 5-0 with a Heartland Conference Section III win over the Panthers.

Backup quarterback Matthew Balichik threw for a pair of scores, connecting with Jacob Schultz for 60 yards in the second quarter and Garrett Varano in the third quarter.

Southern Lehigh 22 Blue Mountain 18

CENTER VALLEY — The Eagles took an 18-15 lead in the third-quarter on Tyler Miller's 30-yard run, but the Spartans (4-1, 2-0 Gold) scored in the final minute of the third quarter on Cade Sawyer's 59-yard scamper to regain the lead and capture the Schuylkill/Colonial Gold Division victory.

Payton Fasnacht added a 24-yard touchdown run for Blue Mountain (2-3, 1-2), while Carson Kerstetter hauled in a 25-yard TD pass from Miller that gave the Eagles a 12-7 lead in the second quarter. Miller rushed 17 times for 127 yards for the Eagles.

NW Lehigh 35 Lehighton 14

LEHIGHTON — Dalton Clymer scored three second-half touchdowns as the Tigers (4-1, 2-0) beat the Indians (1-4, 1-2) in a Schuylkill/Colonial Gold Division game.

The Indians welcomed back starting quarterback Brady O'Donnell, who was injured in a Week 3 loss to Pottsville, and he connected with Ian Rarick on a 65-yard TD pass. Ethan Buchert's 8-yard TD run in the second quarter gave Lehighton a 14-7 lead, but Northwestern Lehigh tied it at the half and surged ahead in the third quarter to gain the victory.

Shamokin 47 Central Mountain 28

COAL TWP. — Knowledge Artis-Jones rushed for 196 yards and four touchdowns as Shamokin beat Central Mountain in a Heartland Conference Division I game.

Artis-Jones scored on runs of 8, 27, 61 and 2 yards.

Brett Nye, returning to the lineup after missing several games due to injury, tossed three TD passes: 42 yards to Ryder Zulkowski, 10 yards to Chase Pensyl and 19 yards to Wisdom Artis-Jones.

Upper Dauphin 41 Newport 20

NEWPORT — Branden Fetterhoff rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns as the Trojans (3-2, 2-1) outlasted the Buffaloes in a Mid-Penn Liberty game.

Brady Morgan paced a ground game that collected 354 yards by rushing 16 times for 144 yards and a 4-yard TD on the final play of the first half to give UDA a 21-14 halftime advantage.

Konner Walker added a pair of scores on a 1-yard run and an 85-yard kickoff return for Upper Dauphin, which used three third-quarter touchdowns to pull away.

Saturday's score Shenandoah Valley 51 Hancock, Md. 12

HANCOCK, Md. — The Blue Devils made the nearly three-hour trek to western Maryland worthwhile, rolling to their first victory of the season in a non-league contest. No further details were provided.
