HPU hosts soccer semifinals
Apr. 13—HIGH POINT — The top-seed High Point University women's soccer team will play host to No. 4-seed Longwood in Vert Stadium today at 7 p.m. in the semifinals of the Big South tournament.
Because of COVID-19 restrictions the conference reduced the tournament to four teams, with all games at the better seed. No. 3 Campbell is at No. 2 Radford in the other semifinal.
Winners play in the championship match Friday.
HPU went 8-0-0 in the league. Campbell and Radford tied for second and Radford got the second seed on the basis of defeating Campbell on March 7. Longwood and Presbyterian for fourth and the Lancers got the final spot by beating the Blue Hose in their regular season meeting.
HPU (9-0 overall) defeated Longwood 4-1 on Thursday.
BIG SOUTH MEN'S SOCCER SEEDS SET
HIGH POINT — The No. 1-seed High Point University will play host to No. 4 seed UNC Asheville in the semifinals of the Big South men's soccer tournament Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Vert Stadium.
HPU rolled to the No. 1 by going 8-0-0 in the conference, and UNCA took the fourth seed with a 3-4-1 record. The Panthers trounced the Bulldogs 5-1 on Thursday.
Because of COVID-19, the conference decided to limit the tournament to four teams and play all games at the better seed. No. 2 seed Campbell entertains No. 3 seed USC Upstate in the other semifinal. They both finished 6-1-1 and Campbell received the No. 2 seed on goal differential.
The winner meet for the championship on Saturday.
HPU BASEBALL WINS SERIES
FARMVILLE, Va. — High Point University's baseball team took two of three from Longwood in a series Friday and Saturday.
HPU hit nine doubles to tie the school division record for most in a game while posting a 12-2 win on Friday. The teams split on Saturday, with HPU winning the first game 11-3 and dropping the second 8-1.
The Panthers are 11-16 (9-11 in the Big South) and entertain Elon today at Williard Stadium.
Peyton Carr and Cole Singsank combined for seven of HPU's 10 RBIs in Saturday' first game.
Carr hit his fifth homer of the season as part of a two-hit, four RBI outing while Singsank had three hits and three RBIs. Sam Zayicek had two hits that included a double.
C.J. Neese, making his first starter, went five innings and got the win.
In the second game, the Panthers scored their only run on Adam Stuart's single that drove in Singsank.
Dawson Place took the loss on the mound.
On Friday, Stuart and Ryan Russell each had three hits and three RBIs. Russell homered twice while Stuart, Singsank and Carr doubled twice. Russell, Zayicek and Blake Sutton each had one double.
The Panthers' 12 runs and 15 hits tied for the most in a game this season. Grey Lyttle picked up the win, improving to 4-3.
TWO PANTHERS WIN
GREENSBORO — High Point University picked up two individual wins in the Aggie Invitational on Saturday at North Carolina A&T.
Adam Craig picked up his first outdoor victory in the pole vault, clearing 4.7 meters. Chris Van Niekerk won the discus with a toss of 52.37m.
PREP FOOTBALL 3 TEAMS MAKE PLAYOFFS
Three area teams — Oak Grove, Southern Guilford and Glenn — were included in the NCHSAA playoff brackets released Saturday.
In the 2AA West, No. 5 Oak Grove (5-2) will travel to No. 4 Ashe County (7-0). In the 3A East, No. 6 Southern Guilford (5-2) will visit No. 3 Havelock (7-0). And in the 4A West, No. 3 Glenn (5-1) will host No. 6 Butler.
The playoffs — which have been reduced this year to essentially halve the teams — will begin Friday.
GLENN, EAST FORSYTH
KERNERSVILLE — Glenn beat rival East Forsyth 35-13 in Central Piedmont 4A Conference football Friday at East.
The Bobcats, who led 28-0 at halftime and beat the Eagles 18-0 earlier this season, improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the CPC — tying for the conference title but giving them the tiebreaker for the CPC's automatic berth.
S. GUILFORD, E. GUILFORD
GIBSONVILLE — Southern Guilford lost 60-36 against Eastern Guilford in Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference football Friday at Eastern.
The Storm dipped to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the MPC but maintained their hold on second place in the conference and the MPC's final automatic playoff berth.
THOMASVILLE, LEXINGTON
THOMASVILLE — Thomasville cruised past Lexington in a Central Carolina 2A Conference football game at Cushwa Stadium that started Friday night and concluded Saturday morning due to the weather.
The Bulldogs, who led 32-0 after one quarter and 46-6 at halftime, finished their season with a 3-3 record both overall and in the conference.
SOCCER WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, CHARLOTTE CHRISTIAN
CHARLOTTE — Wesleyan Christian lost 4-1 against Charlotte Christian in girls soccer Friday at Charlotte Christian.
Ella Heywood scored off an assist by Chapel Byrd for the Trojans (4-1 overall). Kloe Totel made 17 saves in goal.
CONCORD — Wesleyan Christian lost 25-2 against Cannon in boys lacrosse Friday at Cannon.
The Trojans dropped to 0-5 overall.
