Homeowners taken to hospital following house fire east of Kasson

May 25—KASSON — Two people were hospitalized Tuesday after a fire broke out in their home east of Kasson.

Emergency responders from the Dodge County Sheriff's Office, Kasson and Byron fire departments and Dodge Center Ambulance were called about 12:50 a.m. Tuesday to a residence in the 27000 block of Highway 34 for a report of a fire in a garage and smoke in the house.

The homeowners, identified as Tom and Margie Bigalke, evacuated, but are believed to have suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to the hospital for evaluation, according to a news release from the Dodge County Sheriff's Office. The couple was woken by the smoke detectors going off in their home.

The Kasson Fire Department was assisted by the Byron Fire Department as the fire quickly spread to the house, in part due to strong winds.

The Red Cross was called to assist the family. The Minnesota State Fire Marshal was on scene later Tuesday investigating the fire. Initial indications point to a charging battery in the garage as the potential cause of the fire.
