Home winning streak reaches 54 games for Panthers

Nov. 29—Boys basketball

Pecos 62, Santa Fe Prep 42

What happened: Home is truly where the Panthers' heart is. They won their 54th consecutive game Monday in their season opener in Louis G. Sanchez Memorial Gymnasium by rallying from a 29-28 halftime deficit. Prep committed 17 of its 30 turnovers in the second half as Pecos held them to just 13 points after the break. "They grinded us down," Blue Griffins head coach Joe Vigil said. "I said at halftime, 'You guys handled the press well and did what we you needed to do for the first 16 minutes.' But Pecos has a philosophy that they're going to grind you down for another 16 minutes." Pecos outscored the Blue Griffins 20-7 in the third quarter to take a 48-36 lead and never looked back. The last team to beat the Panthers on their home court was Dulce by a 63-57 score on Feb. 5, 2016.

Top players: Senior wing Jodiah Padilla had a team-high 20 points for Pecos, while Aidan Holton added 11 and Zach Fox 10. Prep was paced by Mitch Grover's 11 points. Morgan Fields and Van Anderson added 10 apiece.

What's next: Pecos (1-0) travels to Mora on Tuesday. Prep (0-1) is the opening-round opponent for host Albuquerque Sandia Prep in the Sundevil Invitational on Thursday.
