Holt man killed in snowmobile crash in northern Michigan

BEAR LAKE TWP. – A Holt man was killed Saturday while snowmobiling in northern Michigan.

Gary Sherman, 74, of Holt was riding on Kalkaska Snowmobile Trail 76 just south of M-72 with his son and a family friend, according to the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office.

Sherman was the last in his group when a ski from his sled became stuck in the snow, forcing his sled to veer one way and for him to be thrown from the sled into a tree, the sheriff’s office said.

His son and the family friend turned around when Sherman, who was wearing a helmet, was no longer in sight. They called 911 and CPR was started a short time after the call. Medics continued life-saving efforts but Sherman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office said speed was believed to be a factor in the crash, but the incident remains under investigation. The sheriff’s office, Bear Lake and Kalkaska Township fire departments, Frederick EMS and AEROMED all responded to the crash.
