Hollywood pays tribute to the iconic Kirk Douglas

Kirk Douglas has died at the age of 103, but not without leaving behind one of the most enviable legacies in movie history.

The star of movies like Spartacus and Stanley Kubrick's war epic Paths of Glory was among the last of his generation of leading men, who took on westerns, war movies and swords-and-sandals epics.

He died yesterday at his home in Beverly Hills, his son Michael Douglas at his side.

“It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103,” he said in a post to his Facebook page.

“To the world he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to.

“Dad - I love you so much and I am so proud to be your son.”

Hollywood has paid tribute to a dazzling career in front of the camera.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Anne, Michael and sons Joel and Peter.
