Martine Deveraux has received the alarming news that the lump on her breast may be cancerous in Hollyoaks.

Earlier this week, Martine was sent home from a cancer screening by nurse Peri Lomax after she'd argued with Grace Black outside the clinic as part of an episode dealing with unconscious bias.

In Thursday's (April 15) E4 episode, Martine tried to distract herself by telling Celeste that she'd done her own research and wanted to avoid going back to the clinic.

Celeste wasn't having any of it, especially after the two happened to see Grace on a phone call with the clinic getting the all-clear about her own test.

Martine confronted Felix over the voicemail she left him, but he quickly made an exit after explaining he couldn't leave Grace so quickly after her great news.

Over at the hospital, a furious Celeste confronted Juliet and Peri over Martine's cancelled appointment the prior day – and "straight-up" pointed out that Peri had showed preference to Grace because she's white.

Peri had a crisis of conscience when Misbah agreed that she had acted "unprofessionally" by turning a patient away. The doctor explained to Peri that she is still a "product of society", so she had unconscious biases.

When Peri turned up to apologise, Martine explained: "You should have listened [to Celeste], rather than being defensive, and then you would have understood the problem.

"Then, maybe this whole thing wouldn't be such a big deal."

Peri agreed that she'd been in the wrong, and offered to get Martine's results for her ASAP if she turned up for her rescheduled appointment.

Unfortunately, Martine received some unexpected bad news after her scan when Peri explained she wouldn't be able to check out of the hospital.

"The specialist has looked at your mammogram," Peri explained. "I shouldn't be telling you this but it's not a cyst. Your lump is suspicious."

Martine was stunned, with tears rolling down her cheek as she asked: "You said the only chance I'd have to have a biopsy is if there's a chance it could be cancer?"

In the final moments of the episode, Martine was left alone in her hospital room to think about what the future may hold for her.

Hollyoaks currently airs new episodes from Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
