Eliza Joy Hofer arrived two days later than doctors anticipated, but in missing her Dec. 30 due date, Hofer was the first baby born in Aberdeen in 2023.

Born to Amanda and Jonathan Hofer at 2:36 p.m. on New Year's Day, she was born at Avera St. Luke's Hospital. She weighed 8 lbs. 11 oz, and is 20.5 inches long.

In a phone interview Tuesday, Amanda Hofer said Sunday was a really exciting day, as she wasn't expecting to deliver, but around 7 or 8 a.m. she started having contractions and soon they started getting closer together. Amanda and Jonathan live at Spring Creek Colony near Forbes, N.D., which is about a 50 minute drive to Aberdeen.

They arrived at the hospital at 10 a.m. with the baby delivered about four hours later.

Amanda and Jonathan have two other children, a 3 1/2-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son, both of whom met their new sister Monday.
