'Hocus Pocus,' 'Scream' among Halloween movies coming to Columbia screens

If you enjoy being scared — or just having some fall fun with friends — Columbia venues are bringing iconic Halloween films back to life in October.
These four classics, showing at sister venues The Blue Note and Rose Music Hall, lead the way.
Oct. 6: "Beetlejuice" at Rose Park
"The Ghost with the Most" (Michael Keaton) helps a dearly departed couple (Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis) scare off the family now residing in their former home in this wickedly funny Tim Burton comedy from 1988. Rated PG. 7 p.m.; admission is free. Visit https://rosemusichall.com/ for more details.
Oct. 12: "Hocus Pocus" at Rose Park
The Halloween film of choice for members of a certain generation, this 1993 offering finds some modern-day Salem, Massachusetts, kids squaring off with a trio of resurrected witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy). A sequel debuts Sept. 30 on Disney+. Rated PG. 8 p.m.; free.
Oct. 19: "Scream" at The Blue Note
Boasting one of the scariest opening sequences in modern memory, Wes Craven's 1996 film both sends up and fulfills ideals of the slasher genre. A string of sequels have followed the original, including a sixth film set for next year. Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox star in the original. Rated R. 8 p.m.; $5. Oct. 26: "Rocky Horror Picture Show" at The Blue Note
Enjoy all the one-liners, gags and callbacks in the true midnight movie classic from 1975. Rated R. 9 p.m.; $10.
