HISTORY: Nease's Sydney Gomes breaks St. Johns County girls basketball scoring record

This winter has been nothing short of historical for senior Sydney Gomes.

In a matter of a couple of months, the star Nease guard has recorded her 2,000th career point and broke the St. Johns County scoring record.

The previous record of 2,254 was held by Ponte Vedra's Megan Piggott before Gomes surpassed that in a 20-point performance Jan. 14 against Tocoi Creek.

"Crazy," Gomes said. "When I first got to Nease I didn't think I'd ever have opportunities like these, but I am, after a great last season, breaking these records near the end of my career."

Junior guard Sydney Gomes (44) transferred to Nease after moving to the area from Staten Island. She tallied more than 1,300 points in her first two years at New Dorp (N.Y.), setting Staten Island records along the way. She is averaging 23 points per game to start the 2020-21 season.

The transfer from Staten Island, New York moved to Ponte Vedra prior to her junior year due to an illness in the family.

Ranked as one of the top players in the area, Gomes recorded 1,300 of those points her first two seasons at New Dorp High School.

"She can contribute in any way possible," head coach Sherri Anthony said. "Gets free throws, layups, and-ones, threes, the two-jumper."

The record-breaking shot, however, came off a three-pointer at the right-side wing that swished through the basket, touching nothing but a little bit of the net.

Gomes, with two regular season games left, has 2,298 career points and is 12 away from 1,000 in both Florida and New York.

"Two more games left to get it done," she said. "It's crazy to think about the accomplishments."

On a hot streak

What stands out among Anthony and the rest of Gomes' teammates remains the willingness to improve and never-ending attitude of team-first basketball that Sydney has.

"She's selfless like that," Anthony said. "In games where a player could be wracking up points, she focuses on getting the ball to the right person and taking her shots when needed."

Nease enters the final week of the regular season 19-3 and on an eight-game winning streak.

"Right now our chemistry is at an all-time high," Gomes said. "Any season you can get near 20 wins you know your team is doing something right. To be on this sort of run at this time is something special."
