Hillsdale High School marching band prepares for fall season

The 65-member Hillsdale High School marching band is getting football field-ready.

Band director Keith Rushing has been leading students through band camp for two weeks in preparation for their Elton John-themed half-time show. But first he makes sure they flawlessly play the Hornet fight song and the National Anthem.

Drum major Victoria Brown, a senior, was the assistant drum major last year. Her favorite part of the experience is hearing all the music come together and realizing “We just did that!” she said.

Derek Siddharth has been a band member for several years. Now he is a percussionist, but started out in brass.

“I couldn’t hit the high notes,” he said. “So Doc moved me.”

Siddharth enjoys band so much he’s also the equipment manager.

The flag color guard of five students is led by Lora Glei-Dietz. One of her students, Alexis Bryan, is a senior, but in the corp for the first year.

“I wanted to try something new,” Bryan said. “I love it.”
