High school weekly rewind: Fennville soccer, Zeeland West, WO tennis win conference titles
The Fennville boys soccer team defeated Watervliet 2-0, and with the win clinched the SAC Lakeshore Division Championship on Monday.
Cesar Arredondo scored on an assist from Juan Porrez. Miguel Solis-Salazar also added a goal for Fennville. Jose Sanchez had five saves in goal for the shutout.
"I’m so proud of these young men and the hard work they continue to put in day in and day out," Fennville coach Kyle Nevenzel said. "They gave it all they had tonight against a real tough Watervliet team. It was a great team win with so many guys contributing both offensively and defensively."
Fennville improved to 10-3-1 on the season.
Fennville also defeated Allegan 1-0 on Thursday. Miguel Solis-Salazar scored for Fennville. Jose Sanchez had four saves in goal for the shutout.
BOYS TENNIS
Dux win OK Green
The Zeeland West boys tennis team claimed the OK Green Conference title on Friday.
The Dux scored 49 points to hold off Holland (43), Mona Shores (40), Zeeland East (34), Reeths-Puffer (32), Union (18) and Wyoming (8).
Zeeland West's James Stewart was the flight champion at No. 3 singles, while Tyler Dykstra won at No. 4. Zeeland West's Diego Mendoza-Max Settlemyre won at No. 3 doubles, Quinn Willette-Mikey Fuller won at No. 4. and Luke Bosma-Luke Kaynor were runner-up at No. 2 doubles.
Holland's Sam Payne and Elliot Wehrmeyer won the flight championship at No. 1 doubles. Holland's Andrew Lubbers was runner-up at No. 2 singles.
Zeeland East's Brady Schanski was runner-up at No. 1 singles and Charlie Reese was runner-up at No. 3.
West Ottawa shares OK Red title
On senior night, West Ottawa claimed a 5-4 win over Hudsonville. West Ottawa improved to 7-0 in their OK-Red Dual matches. This is the first time since 2014 that the boys team has gone undefeated in OK Red Dual match play. The Panthers then finished second in the OK Red tournament to share the overall title with Hudsonville.
In the conference tournament, Cody Schurman and Jake Bloemers were flight champions at No. 2 doubles. Hugh Ervine and Teddy Mauger won at No. 5.
In the dual match, Elliot Dozeman won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Traiden Bethke won 6-2, 7-6(7) at No. 2.
Brody Ruby-Brayden Goodwin won 7-6(3), 6-1 at No. 3 doubles. Max McCormick-Landon Meyer won 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 and Hugh Ervine-Teddy Mauger won 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5.
CROSS COUNTRY
Saugatuck wins SAC jamboree
The Saugatuck boys cross country team won the SAC jambore on Wednesday with some adversity.
Senior Luke Gorgas has been dealing with a lung issues since getting sick early in the season came through big finishing seventh. Our dual sport athlete, Junior Russell VandePoel continues to impress with solid 11th place finish. Charlie Stormer is recovering from illness and a hip injury to place 12th. Freshmen Sammy Gamboa lost his shoe early in the race but that didn’t stop him from placing 23rd. Fellow Freshmen Brennan Nor placed 24th to round out the scoring. Junior Loch Rigozzi placed 28th and Sophomore Justin Oetman placed 38th.
GIRLS SWIMMING
West Ottawa 173, Rockford 142
The No. 9 Panthers topped the No. 8 Rams.
West Ottawa's Makenzie Baldwin won the 200 freestyle (1:58.52) and the 100 backstroke (58.84). Oriana O'Mealey won the 200 IM (2:16.34). Kalyna Pyk won the 50 freestyle (25.03) and 100 freestyle (54.50). Baylee Davis won the 500 freestyle (5:29.38). Paige Swarthout won the 100 breaststroke (1:11.10).
Zeeland 103, Hamilton 81
Zeeland's Madison Ensing won the 200 freestyle (1:57.21) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.93). Abigail Brinks won the 50 freestyle (26.90) and the 100 backstroke (1:05.17). Sadie Huizenga won diving (219.15 points).
Hamilton's Adaline Garvelink won the 200 IM (2:29.54). Emma DenUyl won the 500 freestyle (5:49.01). Jocelyn Borg won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.18).
BOYS SOCCER
Holland 2, West Ottawa 2
Celebrating Holland's homecoming in soccer because the football season ended prematurely, the Dutch tied West Ottawa 2-2 on Saturday.
Holland's Fletcher VanHowe opened the scoring in the first three minutes of the match.
But West Ottawa went up 2-1 at halftime. Andy Solis' physical presence forced a turnover on a defender to cough up the ball to score the first goal for the Panthers. This is his second game in a row in which his press created a goal from a turnover. This goal energized the Panthers to lead a second goal before the end of the first half. The second goal came off a counter attack where Solis was able to handle defensive pressure to maintain possession. This gave Kamren Manikham time to make a run through the gap of the defenders to go one-on-one against the keeper.
In the second half, Holland regrouped and put pressure on the West Ottawa goal. In a scramble in front of the net, Paul Klomparens pounded the ball into the corner to tie up the match. Holland continued to get opportunities including a very close shot by Jacob VanHekken that hit both the crossbar and the side support.
"It was a big game against a big rival with a big crowd," said Holland coach Greg Ceithaml. "I thought we played very well, especially in the second half. We seem to be getting healthy and increasing our pace of play at the right time." Holland is now 5-9-3.
Zeeland East 6, Hamilton 0
The Chix won the non-conference game.
Holland Christian 1, Covenant Christian 0
The Maroons improved to 10-1-3 behind a goal from Caden Petroelje on an assist from Chase Brink.
Adam Bergman and James Oosterhouse each made two saves in goal.
Black River 3, Bloomingdale 1
Black River won on homecoming in a rematch of last year’s district final. Goals went to Julian Fowler with two and Dominic Pietri. Assist went to Brady Davidson with two and Charlie Reither.
Black River 8, Parchment 0
The Rats put a complete game together with assists on each of the eight goals. Goals went to Emir Erdem with two goals, Ty Elmer, Brady Davidson, Jake VanderHenst, Charlie Reither, Mike Galicia, and Aaron Summitt. Assists went to RJ Villegas with two, Ty Elmer with two, Mike Galicia with two, VanderHenst, and Davidson. Talan Nahal and Jake Caropepe combined for the shutout.
GR Catholic Central 4, West Ottawa 1
The Panthers lost the non-conference game on senior night and Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. Andy Solis scored the goal for West Ottawa.
"The event was very festive and brought the community together for a fun game to watch," West Ottawa coach Hoa Nguyen said.
VOLLEYBALL
Holland Christian 3, Unity Christian 0
The Maroons won the OK Blue match 25-20, 26-24, 25-20 on Tuesday.
Annabel Pierce led the way for Maroons, with nine kills and 0.4 hitting percentage as well as four aces. Tryna Vanderzwaag led with six aces, and 24 assists and five kills. Avery Huisman controlled the backrow with 17 digs.
Holland Christian 3, Allendale 1
The Maroons won the OK Blue match 25-18, 19-25, 26-24, 25-13 on Thursday.
Sophia Pierce led the way with a season high 15 kills. Annabel Pierce had a strong serve game with fives aces and 12 kills. Erica Mulder led the way with 28 digs. Tryna VanderZwaag had 51 assists.
"Our girls came to play. We had our low moments and I give credit to Allendale and their serve game for giving us some troubles. We stayed focused and continued to believe we were still in the game," Holland Christian coach Gerrit VanKlaveren said. "I think our hitters just started to connect and our serves stayed aggressive to keep them out of system and we did not look back in the last set."
Zeeland East 3, Mona Shores 0
The Chix won the OK Green match 25-22, 25-13, 26-24 on Tuesday.
Reilly Zegunis had 16 kills and Katie Carlson had 15. Macey Smith served four aces. Cece Huizingh had 37 assists. Kiria Elenbaas had 17 digs and Smith had 14.
Zeeland West 3, Wyoming 0
The Zeeland West volleyball team defeated Wyoming High School in three sets on Thursday night (25-9, 25-4, 25-9). The win brings the Dux to 13-5 overall and 5-1 in the OK green.
It was a record breaking night for setter Lindsey Houle, who set a Zeeland West all-time record for career assists. During the third set, she handed out assist number 2013 of her career to pass the previous record of 2012 held by Aubrey Wilson.
Houle had 25 assists. Nevaeh Bakker had 11 kills and four aces. Lindy Gulker had 10 digs.
Zeeland West 3, Reeths-Puffer 0
Nevaeh Bakker had 10 kills. Lindy Gulker had 13 digs and Ally Yonker had 11. Lindsey Houle had 26 assists.
West Ottawa 3, Grandville 1
The Panthers won the OK Red match 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 25-15.
The team started out slow in the first set, but stormed back to finish the set strong, with a win. Strong serve receive and relentless defense is what propelled the team to a 3-1 set win.
On Saturday, the Panthers lost to Forest Hills Central and defeated Unity Christian before topping Portage Northern in three sets and a loss to Saline.
Holland 3, Muskegon 0
The Dutch won the OK Green match 25-12, 25-7, 25-14.
Holland hosted Muskegon for their first anual Be Nice match.
Leading the Dutch in aces were Jada Livingston and Madison Postma. Leading in kills were Libby LeFebre and Holly Byrd. Leading in assists was Makayla Peart. And leading the team in digs were Makayla Peart, Ari Gray and Jada Livingston.
The Dutch also beat Union 3-0. Leading the Dutch were Makayla Peart with 16 assists and 10 digs; Libby LeFebre with 10 kills and eight digs; Jada Livingston with three aces, four kills and nine digs; and Ari Gray with eight kills and 11 digs.
Hamilton 3, Spring Lake 0
The Hawkeyes won the OK Blue match 25-22, 25-14, 29-27.
Joelle Boeskool had 20 assists and 14 digs. Jeralyn Hoppes had 13 kills. Madie Jamrog had 17 digs and four blocks. Hanna Glupker chipped in with five kills.
"Both of our key middle hitters were out tonight. With our libero Hannah Glupker playing as an outside and our outsides Madie Jamrog and Jer Hoppes playing as middles. We did a great job adjusting to different positions and were able to work together as a team and win," Hamilton coach Britney Fogerty said.
Hamilton 3, Fruitport 0
The Hawkeyes won the OK Blue match 25-17, 25-23, 28-26.
Madie Jamrog had 12 kills, Joelle Boeskool had seven and Cami Eding had five.
The Hawkeyes also lost 3-1 to Wayland on Thursday.
Saugatuck 3, Delton 2
The Trailblazers won 17-25, 26-24, 17-25, 26-24, 15-11 on Tuesday.
Haley Rivera had 14 digs and nine assists. Jenn Schock had 11 assists and 10 digs. Alyssa Ries had 11 kills and 13 digs. Kennedy Gustafson had 15 kills and Jacey Merkle had 17 digs.
On Thursday, Saugatuck defeated Parchment 25-16, 25-13 and lost to Kalamazoo Christian 25-4, 25-9 in a tri match.
Jenn Schock had nine assists and eight digs. Kennedy Gustafson had six kills.
GIRLS GOLF
Dux win Wooden Shoe
Zeeland West shot a 181 to win the Wooden Shoe Invitational.
Holland Christian was second (190), followed by Hamilton (211), Zeeland East (248) and Holland (258).
The Dux were led by Rylee Smith who was the medalist with a 1 under par 35 score. Eve Kasten contributed a 48 which was T-4th overall while Natalie Kernstock and Kairi Beckwith had a pair of 49's (T-6th).
The Chix were led by Carly Lukins with a second place finish with a score of 41. Also scoring for the Chix were Katherine Rogovich, Taya Schanski and Kendyll Samora.
Holland's Emma Hulst and Kristin Messer shot 56 each.
Panthers take eighth in OK Red
The Panthers traveled to Thornapple Pointe to compete in the OK Red Post Season Tournament. Ana Niziolek, who earned jonorable mention all-conference, led the way with a 96, Danika Denhof scored with a 104, while Anne Uzelac shot 112 and Isabella Grantham rounded out the scoring with a 118.
BOYS WATER POLO
Zeeland 14, West Ottawa 10
Zeeland Water Polo defeated West Ottawa 14-10 on Monday. It was a back and fourth game but the Chix and Dux were able to stave off the Panthers.
Mason Landes had a season-high 12 goals and earned 3 kickouts. Will Posthumus had three assists and one of Zeeland's other goals and Carter Freeman was responsible for the final goal. Ethan Streeter and Connall Pierson both had great defensive games with six steals each.
Zeeland then lost to No. 2 Jenison, 13-5. Will Posthumus had a great game with two goals, four steals, and an assist. Mason Landes had two goals, two assists, and three drawn exclusions. Lucas Dattels scored the teams final goal on a great shot on a man-up possession.
