High school varsity sports roundup (Jan. 18)

Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Girls basketball

Chesapeake 45, Northeast 33: Junior point guard Ella Shannon scored 14 points to lead the Cougars past their Pasadena rivals. Senior power forward Kylie Capes had a strong all-around game with nine points, 15 rebounds and six steals for Chesapeake (4-2). Senior forward Michaela Dennis contributed seven points and six rebounds. Vanessa Tomshack scored 12 points and Maggie Lawrence added nine to lead Northeast.

Meade 46, Southern 37: Senior guard Carlissa Hill and sophomore forward Avani Burton scored 13 points apiece to lead Meade. Isabella Wooster scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds for the host Bulldogs. Lindsey Miller netted 11 points, while Jordan Wheeler totaled seven points and 11 rebounds for Southern.

South River 48, Arundel 38: Freshmen Karlee Hawkins and Ryleigh Adam both posted double-doubles to lead the Seahawks. Hawkins led the way with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Adam totaled 14 points and 10 boards. Senior Leila Townsend also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for South River, which outscored Arundel 21-10 in the fourth quarter. Senior guard Heather Middleton totaled 18 points, nine rebounds and seven steals for Arundel. Senior forward Nyla Laniyonu had nine points and six rebounds.

Century 54, Liberty 50: Mia Graff poured in 23 points to go with 11 rebounds, and Eva Brandt had 15 points and 19 rebounds as the Knights overcame a halftime deficit and edged out the Lions, moving to 10-1 on the season. Also for Century, Erin Mellendick scored seven. Maddi Hagerty scored 13 to lead Liberty. Dani Paulsen backed her with 10 points.

Boys basketball

Severna Park 63, Annapolis 41: Senior Anthony Bocchetta poured in 26 points to spark the Falcons, who improved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in Anne Arundel County play. Sophomore Brenden Abell added 13 points in the win. Kemari Taylor scored 11 points to lead Annapolis.

St. John’s-D.C. 62, St. Mary’s 50: Senior point guard Peyton Mason scored 15 points for the Saints in the nonconference loss. Senior Connor Harris scored 12 points, while junior Grady Wolfe totaled eight points and five rebounds in the loss. St. Mary’s was outscored 43-30 over the second and third quarters
