May 10—With the rainout of last Friday's scheduled Northern Lakes League softball game between Springfield and visiting Anthony Wayne, the area's best two teams will now have to make up both of their league games.

Earlier, on April 21, a Springfield-at-AW contest was postponed by snow.

In the Ohio High School Softball Coaches Association Division I poll released May 3, Springfield (19-2 overall, 8-0 NLL) was ranked No. 6 in the state, and Anthony Wayne (18-1, 8-0) was ranked in the No. 8 spot.

The game that was snowed out is scheduled to be made up on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Anthony Wayne, and the rainout from last Friday is set to played on May 24 at Springfield.

There will be no such title-chase drama in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference, as Whitmer clinched at least a share of its third straight softball champion with its 16-4 victory in five innings at St. Ursula on Saturday.

The Panthers were led offensively by the area's most productive hitter this season, sophomore shortstop Sophia Wygast, who was 4-for-4 with five RBI in the win.

The Panthers (20-5 overall, 12-0 TRAC) has two conference games remaining — both against Notre Dame — Monday at Whitmer at 5 p.m., and Thursday at Notre Dame at 5 p.m.

Whitmer, which shared TRAC titles with Clay in 2019 and Notre Dame in 2018, can take an outright crown with a win in either game versus Notre Dame this week.

Wygast is batting .630 (43 for 76) with 12 home runs and 52 RBIs on the season. The Panthers are slotted to begin Division I tournament play with a sectional final at home Wednesday against Bowling Green at 5 p.m.
