Crop comments: Once again, the top five teams in the Crop came away with victories in Week 6, but there are some changes in the second half of this week's rankings. ... Riverside stays at No. 1 with a convincing win over Mayfield. The Beavers will be a heavy favorite over winless North in Week 7 before a rugged test against Martinsburg, W.Va., in Week 8. But at this point, it's hard to bet against the Beavers, isn't it? Such a well-rounded team. ... Chardon got a tough test from Kenston but pulled away with a few late touchdowns to win and keep the No. 2 slot. The Hilltoppers get a week off before embarking on a three-game run of Madison, South and North to end the regular season. ... Mentor aired things out in a 35-14 win over Brunswick, despite a banged-up offensive line. The No. 3 Cardinals play at Medina in Week 7 in what many feel is the GCC title game. They might be right. ... Kirtland remains at No. 4 with a 38-6 win over Chagrin Falls. The next two weeks — home against Perry and at Lakeside — will decide the CVC Chagrin title. ... VASJ ran its winning streak to five in a row and now plays Columbus Hartley. The young Vikings, who remain at No. 4, get better week by week. ... Perry is at No. 6 after hammering Edgewood (which came in at 4-1). The Pirates travel to Kirtland in Week 7. A win makes the CVC Chagrin race very interesting. A loss is tough because expecting someone else beat Kirtland is kind of hoping against hope. ... Kenston moves up to No. 7 despite losing to Chardon. The Bombers host Madison in Week 7, a game they don't want to take for granted. ... Mayfield lost to Riverside in Week 6, but remains at No. 8. The Wildcats' three losses are to Nordonia, Chardon and Riverside — all with 5-1 records. They face South this week, and will be favored against North and Madison before a Week 10 battle at Kenston. ... University moves up a slot to No. 10 with a gut-check win over Gilmour. Ryan Pattison has turned in one of the best rushing performances in the area this year. US faces state-ranked Mogadore in Week 7. ... Gilmour checks in at No. 10. Turnovers hurt the Lancers in the loss to US. The 5-1 Lancers will face winless Cleveland Central Catholic this week.
