HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Permian responds quickly against Mesquite Poteet

Sep. 18—Permian quarterback Rodney Hall rushed for three touchdowns and Tristan Johnson and Juzstyce Lara each rushed for more than 100 yards to lead the Panthers to a 49-14 victory against Mesquite Poteet in nondistrict play Friday at Ratliff Stadium.

Permian needed this game, for reasons much deeper than the final score, after suffering its first loss of the season last week.

The game was scheduled after both Panthers and the Pirates saw their previously scheduled opponents sidelined due to COVID-19 protocols.

"This was just what we needed," Permian defensive coordinator Vance Washington said. "We still have things to work on, but a much better game for us tonight."

The Panthers (3-1) closed out their nondistrict schedule by gaining 578 yards on offense, including 525 yards rushing, the second highest single-game total in program history.

Johnson finished with 165 yards rushing on 10 carries and one touchdown, with Lara adding 127 yards and one score on 10 carries.

Hall finished with scoring runs of 41, 3 and 2 yards.

Mesquite Poteet (3-2) showed immediately that it made the six-hour bus ride to West Texas to compete, with Joey Shaw racing 67 yards for a touchdown on the second play of the game.

Shaw finished with 17 carries for 111 yards and the one score.

Johnson answered right away, breaking through the line over the right side and outrunning the defense for a 63-yard score that tied the game and started a run of 42 answered points by the Panthers.

"That was a good response," Washington said. "They (Mesquite Poteet) are a good team, with good speed and they came to play.

"We needed this game after last week; we didn't need two weeks off heading into district and thinking about last week. And you could see it with the kids after the game, how much better they feel."
