High school football: Big plays, Leroy Rodriguez lead Carroll past King

Carroll quarterback Benny Hernandez hit Jasion Juarez for a 54-yard touchdown on the third play of the game, kickstarting a huge Tigers first half in a 49-14 win against King in District 14-5A Division I play at Cabaniss Multipurpose Stadium on Friday.

Running back Leroy Rodriguez was a big factor in the Tigers jumping to a big lead, scoring twice in the first half and amassing 154 of his 171 rushing yards before the half, including touchdown runs of 49 and 62 yards.

Rodriguez also had all 74 of his receiving yards in the first half as Carroll jetted ahead 35-7. The Tigers posted nearly 400 yards in the first half on their way to a 496-yard night.

King's Jordan Castillo was a gamebreaker for the Mustangs, tallying 168 yards and one touchdown, but Castillo and the Mustangs turned the ball over on downs twice in Tigers territory after pulling within 21-7.

Hernandez and the Carroll passing game finished with 237 yards.

Carroll evened its record at 1-1 and improved to 3-2 overall under first-year head coach Cal Neatherlin. King fell to 0-5, 0-2.
