High school bowlers gear up for conference tournaments this week

As the regular high school bowling season continues, conference events for local schools have been set for Feb. 4 to determine champions and individual bowling awards.

The Portage Trail Conference tournament boys and girls will compete at Spins Bowl in Kent on Feb. 4 beginning at 8:30 a.m. and includes Rootstown and Southeast among Portage County teams.

The Suburban League Conference tournament will bowl at Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn. Kent Roosevelt will compete against the 10 teams in the league, including Stow and Tallmadge, in the postseason conference tourney beginning at 11 a.m.

The Metro Athletic Conference takes its postseason tournament to Stonehedge Lanes in Akron beginning at 10 a.m. as Ravenna and Streetsboro compete.

Garfield looks to bowl well at the MVAC tournament set to bowl at McKinley Lanes in Niles on Feb. 4.

Finally, the Crestwood Red Devils will make their mark in the CVC on Feb. 4 at the conference tournament set for Wickliffe Lanes beginning at noon.

OHSAA tournaments

As conference tournaments conclude, bowlers are preparing to travel the OHSAA tournament trail, seeking a spot at the OHSAA championships.

Local schools and their tournament dates and sites are:

Division I at Freeway Lanes in Warren on Feb 19: Kent Roosevelt and Streetsboro. Boys teams bowl at 9 a.m., girls teams at 2 p.m.

Division 2 at Spins Bowl in Kent include: Crestwood, Garfield, Ravenna, Rootstown and Southeast. Boys bowl at 9 a.m. on Feb. 10. Girls bowl at 9 a.m. on Feb. 13.

Rover Sectional Preview Tournament results

More than 40 teams competed over two days at Spins Bowl in Kent in the 16th annual Rover Sectional Preview Tournament.

The Rootstown Rovers earned the championship at the Division II tournament, topping Coventry by more than 330 pins. East Canton girls topped the Rover girls by 33 pins to win their division.

The Rovers' Cassie Egli rolled the third high series, a 564, followed by teammate Payton Curall tossing a 564. Justin Miller bowled the high game of the tournament, a 258 on his way to a 658 series that was the runner-up. Carson Flowers (627) and Nick Morehead (622) rounded out the high series medalists for Rootstown.

The Division I tournament saw Nordonia top Stow by 29 pins to earn the boys championship. Green bested the Nordonia girls by more than 200 pins to earn the girls team victory.

Kent Roosevelt’s Parker Balan cracked into the top five series, rolling a 659.
