Friday/Saturday Key Games

Friday

(Boys) No. 3 North Mecklenburg (5-0) at Hough (6-1), 7:30 p.m. (girls, 6 p.m.) – It’s opening night in the Queen City 3A-4A Conference, which is loaded with basketball powerhouses. The visiting Vikings have looked every bit the part of a state power and are ranked No. 1 in the state this week among 4A schools. But Hough is off to a big start. Rashad McCormick (15.7 points, 6.7 rebounds a game) is leading the Huskies, who would like to join the Vikings, Chambers and West Charlotte among the league’s contenders.

(Girls) No. 6 Cannon School (6-2) vs. Crestwood Preparatory, 7:20 p.m., in Warrenton, Va. – The Cougars are competing in the She Got Game Classic, being played in the Washington area. Lili Booker (15.5 points a game) leads Cannon School against a Toronto prep school that has won several Ontario provincial championships in recent years. The game is being played at St. James School, outside Washington.

Saturday

(Girls) No. 3 Cannon School (5-2) vs. Cardinal O’Hara (0-1), 2 p.m., in Warrenton, Va. – This is the Cougars’ second contest in the She Got Game Classic, and like Friday’s, it will be played at St. James School. Cardinal O’Hara is a Catholic girls’ basketball powerhouse in the Philadelphia suburb of Springfield.

(Boys) No. 1 Carmel Christian (9-1) vs. Northwood (3-0), 7:30 p.m., at Smith High, in Greensboro – The Cougars face a perennial public school state power in the Tourney Town Showcase. Jaeden Mustaf (16.7 points a game) leads Carmel Christian, while Drake Powell is averaging 22.3 points a game for Northwood, which is second in the state’s 3A rankings this week.

(Boys) Southeast Hoops Festival at West Charlotte High – Five games are on the schedule, including contests feature No. 5-ranked United Faith Christian (ranked No. 4 among the state’s private schools), No. 12 West Charlotte (No. 3 in 3A statewide), and No. 8 Olympic (No. 6 in 4A statewide).
