Hersey Just Recalled Its Chocolate Shell Topping, So Check Your Cabinets
Hershey has announced a voluntary recall of a single lot of chocolate shell topping due to a packaging error that led to undeclared allergens. Only 1,700 bottles are impacted by the recall and anything purchased prior to April 15 is not affected.
The recall comes after the company found out that some of its chocolate shell topping bottles were mistakenly filled with Heath topping. Heath topping contains almonds and therefore the affected bottles contain an undeclared allergen. Tree nuts like almonds are classified as one of the Food & Drug Administration's "Big Eight" allergens along with milk, eggs, peanuts, fish, crustacean shellfish, wheat, and soy.
Those bottles in question were shipped to retailers nationwide between April 15 and May 3, 2021, so if you purchased Hershey's shell topping before April 15 you're in the clear. Once the issue was noticed, Hershey let retailers know that the affected bottles should immediately be removed from shelves.
To see if the topping you may have in your possession is good to go, be sure that it doesn't have a product code of 25JSAS1. The recall only includes Hershey's chocolate shell topping and does not have an effect on any other products in the Hershey portfolio.
No illnesses or injury related to the recall have been reported at the time of publication. The situation was an isolated error at a contract manufacturing facility and was immediately addressed to ensure it doesn't happen again. If you have the recalled item in your possession, dispose of it as soon as possible and contact Hershey at 1-866-528-6848 for a full refund.
