Herkimer College's David Cook finishes 12th in singles at NJCAA bowling tournament
LANSING, Mich. – Herkimer College sophomore David Cook bowled a 636 series at Royal Scot Golf and Bowling last week and placed 12th in the men’s singles competition at the NJCAA’s national bowling championship tournament.
Herkimer was one of 22 teams from seven states competing in the tournament and Cook, a Little Falls High School graduate, was one of 132 bowlers.
Rock Valley College of Illinois won its second team championship in three years with Iowa Central Community College second and New York’s Erie Community College finishing third.

The Herkimer men finished 21st as a team while the women were 13th among 18 teams in a tournament also won by Rock Valley. The Herkimer women had won the Region III championship in February when the men were fifth in their competition.
Cook opened with a 244 in the first game on the final day of competition. He followed with a 190 and closed with a 202, finishing with a 212 average. Cameron Brundage from Iowa Western Community College placed first with a 720, the only singles score over 700.
There were 128 bowlers competing in the men’s singles event. Herkimer’s Michael Carlson from Barneveld rolled a 431 and Chris Hardin from Rome threw a 341 series. Matt Zemla, Brandon Massett, Susan Stevens, Trevir Relyea and Derek Duerheimer from Mohawk Valley Community College had 558, 490, 472, 460 and 401 series, respectively. Andrew Bauer was the high roller for Fulton-Montgomery Community College with a 503.
Rock Valley’s team of Zach Joiner and James Stewart won the doubles competition with Bauer and Justin Hulbert scoring 993, Duerheimer and Zemla 992, and Carlson and Cook 965.
The Mohawk Valley men finished 15th as a team and Fulton-Montgomery was 20th.
Sianna Kenyon, a sophomore from Ilion, was the top singles scorer for the Herkimer women, placing 66th among 95 competitors with her 442 series. Sophie Hyde from Mohawk threw a 394 and Abigail Maurelli from Morris had a 351.
Iowa Central had the women’s top double team, Olivia Nolte and Abigail Price. Kenyon and Hyde scored 766. The Herkimer duo had won the doubles competition at regionals.
Cook placed 26th in the men’s all-event competition with a 191.67 average over three days. Kenyon was 47th among the women with a 143.17 average.
The three-day tournament was contested March 3-5. Herkimer has competed in the last six national tournaments under coach Anthony DeLuca.
