Here's why Ole Miss baseball canceled game against Arkansas State

Ole Miss baseball has opted to cancel its previously scheduled midweek game at Arkansas State on Tuesday.

The Rebels (31-19, 13-14 SEC) were scheduled to travel to Jonesboro for their final midweek game of the season but have elected not to play it because of "traveling and scheduling circumstances." Ole Miss joins a trend of Power 5 teams opting not to play end-of-season midweek games against opponents that rank low in the RPI that can only hurt their postseason resumes as they fight to make it to the NCAA Tournament.

Ole Miss enters the last week of the regular season ranked No. 39 in the RPI. Arkansas State ranks 231st out of 301 teams. A win against Arkansas State would only bring down the Rebels' strength of schedule and a loss against Arkansas State could prove disastrous.

The Rebels previous defeated the Red Wolves 15-5 in a five-inning game on Feb. 23.

On a seven-game winning streak, Ole Miss starts a three-game series against No. 11 Texas A&M at Swayze Field beginning Thursday (6:30 p.m., SEC Network+).
