Tolson's Tap and Tavern, Pembroke

"We wanted to be that neighborhood bar tavern that families come in for food and people come in for drinks," said Karl Heine, co-owner of Tolson's Tap and Tavern, which took the place of the British Beer Company in Pembroke.

Heine, who works alongside co-owner Darren Chun, of Kingston, said two weeks after purchasing the property, the restaurant was up and running with its own "signature stamp."

Garden Patch, Quincy

Craig Somers and his son Travis opened Garden Patch by the Sea on Wollaston Beach this past spring, replacing breakfast and sandwich shop Maddie's Cafe. The menu looks like familiar beach fare with crabcakes, seafood platters and personal pizzas, but it's missing common ingredients like meat, butter, lard, eggs and cow's milk.

Using meat substitutes made of soy, legumes and pea protein, Garden Patch sells everything you'd find at a traditional beach eatery, from salads to fish platters and chicken wings.

Chopsticks & Forks, Scituate

Chopsticks & Forks is a new Asian-fusion restaurant in Scituate.  Sam Lin took over the old Riva location on Front Street and the restaurant is making a name for itself with its sushi.

Lin and chef Jimmy Yu, who has been honing his craft for 25 years, said fresh ingredients make all the difference. The restaurant serves scallops from New Bedford and oysters from Duxbury. Japanese red snapper and other exotic fish are delivered from Japan every five days.

“Freshness is the key to good food,” Lin said.

Blacksmith Tavern, Pembroke

Executive Chef Zach Prifti said Pembroke's Blacksmith Tavern is versatile: fit for diners to grab a burger and a beer or visit for a family meal.

"We wanted to take a different menu that you don't find on the South Shore," Prifti said. "That was the goal on day one."

The restaurant opened in April after eight months of construction, said co-owner Chris Schweiger, who also owns The Anchor and The Oysterman in Duxbury. The former Charlie's Too location on Route 14 near the Pembroke/Duxbury town line was completely gutted and expanded by about 2,000 square feet.

Sullivan's Castle Island, Hanover

Sullivan's Castle Island will open later this year at Hanover Crossing.
Sullivan's Castle Island will open later this year at Hanover Crossing.

Sullivan's Castle Island – known locally as Sully's – will open a 6,000-square-foot restaurant at Hanover Crossing, a new open-air complex with about 600,000 square feet of retail space planned for Route 53.

Sullivan's owner Brendan Sullivan, of Milton, said the restaurant will offer the same "grab-and-go" service that patrons get in South Boston, but there will also be a sit-down bar area and patio where people can order a beer or a glass of wine go to with their meal.
