Henderson Collegiate celebrates 82 new graduates

Jun. 15—HENDERSON — On Saturday, Henderson Collegiate celebrated its graduating "Pride" of 2021.

All 82 graduates are college-bound this fall, earning $10.4 million in scholarships.

Some of the colleges the students plan to attend this fall are East Carolina University, Princeton University, Santa Fe College, Delaware State University, Harvard University, N.C. State University, N.C. A&T State University, Elizabeth City State University, UNC Chapel Hill and more.

This is the third year that every student in the graduating class was accepted into college.

Last year's graduate students were allowed to sit 6 feet apart and walk the stage while parents drove up as students' names were called. This year, both students and families were allowed to attend the commencement.

School officials encouraged families to keep their masks on. Students and staff also wore their masks throughout the ceremony. Students were also allowed to each speak as they walked across the stage and share which college they would be attending.

This school year Henderson Collegiate high school students worked remotely due to COVID-19 restrictions. The students and staff talked about working from home and what they accomplished this school year.

"It was difficult having my senior year online, but I'm happy I completed it. I would just like to say cherish every moment and have fun," said graduate Tyleiah Edwards, who will be attending N.C. A&T this fall.

Henderson Collegiate founder Eric Sanchez also shared his thoughts with the class of 2021 and families, talking about how the class would always be known for being serious but also fun. He also spoke about the qualities he'll remember of each student.

Parents and loved ones of the students cheered throughout the entire ceremony, not just for their child but for all.

"I feel excited for the Pride of 2021," said Shamera Miller, stepmother of a graduate. "I hope they do excellent beyond high school. I'm very proud, especially for my stepdaughter."

This fall, all students of Henderson Collegiate will be back on campus full time.
