EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Alex and Devin Bullard had a business. They just needed the perfect spot to open it.

The Bullards are from a tiny town in Mississippi and, after much research, they decided Evansville was that spot – so they moved on up and Corner Nutrition opened in Hebron Office Plaza in September.

The Bullards were sure the smoothie, coffee and tea shop, selling Herbalife products, would be a hit. Devin’s brother has a shop in Mississippi and his sister has one in Tennessee.

“I worked for Devin’s brother for a year and a half,” Alex said. “I was there every day, I knew what I was doing, I loved the products, and I started thinking, ‘why don’t I have one of these of my own?” But we needed to find a good place to do it, because Down South is covered up with Nutrition stores. We wanted to move away from home while we’re young and don’t have kids, and we wanted a place where Nutrition stores are new and fresh and we could bring something exciting and healthy for the community.”

Herbalife-based Nutrition stores are certainly trending. Franklin Nutrition opened recently on West Franklin Street, and Hometown Nutrition is coming soon on Main Street.

Many people are familiar with Herbalife as a multi-level marketing business, but it’s more than that.

Folks who sign up with Herbalife may sell the products to others directly, or they may buy them in bulk as the basis of a business, which they have great freedom to adapt and design themselves. So, to get an Herbalife protein shake or loaded tea, you don’t have to buy ingredients from the company or worry about being recruited to sell. You just walk into a Nutrition store and get your freshly-blended drink.

If you want some powders to take home, you can get those at the store, too.

“We have some customers who buy the ingredients so they can make their drinks at home, and we have others who come in a few times a week to get their drinks and go,” Alex said. “We don’t have anyone selling under us -- we’re just here because we believe in the products and want to bring a healthy fast-food option to the community.”

Different drinks have different nutritional profiles depending on your needs. You may choose a meal replacement shake with 24 to 27 grams of protein, very little fat and no sugar. Coffees can have protein added. Loaded teas are energy drinks that come in fruity flavors but don’t contain sugar. Flavors are decadent, ranging from chocolate caramel cheesecake to banana nut bread to peanut butter and jelly.

“I love love love the loaded teas,” Alex said. “Down South that’s the thing everybody loves, because we don’t have the Starbuck’s and Dunkin’ Donuts in my town so this is where everybody gets their caffeine. But there’s no sugar in it so there’s no sugar crash, the caffeine is natural from tea and guarana, it has ginseng in it, and you get an aloe shot with it to help you absorb the nutrients better. We have options for everybody. If you’re big into the gym, we have fitness products with whey proteins, we have a vegetarian protein for people who want that, then we have classic soy protein for people who want to stay low on carbs and sugar.”

More products will be coming. Look soon for protein bars and protein bites, and even a protein you can put in your baking to make a high protein muffins or pancakes.
