Hayden Panettiere says losing custody of daughter amid addiction battle ‘wasn’t fully my decision’

Hayden Panettiere said there wasn’t a discussion with her ex before their young daughter moved full time with him to Ukraine.

The actress, who recently opened up about her battles with drug and alcohol, split from Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko in 2018.

In a new interview on Facebook’s “Red Table Talk,” Panettiere spoke about giving up custody of daughter Kaya, who moved with her dad to Ukraine in 2018.

“She was almost 3, and it wasn’t fully my decision,” Panettiere said on the episode released Wednesday. “In fact, I didn’t even know it was happening until she was already over there.”

Panettiere, 33, said she likely would have agreed if Klitschko told her he’d like their daughter to Ukraine while the actress worked on her addiction issues, but says, “It wasn’t a discussion.”

“Because of the way that it was done, it was very upsetting,” Panettiere said.

The actress, who starred on the series “Heroes” and the film “Friday Night Lights,” said signing over custody was the “most heartbreaking thing” she’s ever had to do.

“I was gonna go work on myself, I was gonna get better, and when I got better then things would change and she could come to me and I could have my time with her, but that didn’t happen,” Panettiere said.

Panettiere, who is from Palisades, N.Y., detailed her addiction issues during an interview with People that was published in July, saying opiates and alcohol put her “in a cycle of self-destruction.”

She said she feels like she has a “second chance” and has no regrets about what she’s gone through.
