Haverstraw man pleads guilty to course of sexual conduct against child

A Haverstraw man has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a young girl on multiple occasions over a nearly four-year period.

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Walsh said the guilty plea came after jury selection had begun late last week in anticipation of a trial.

Walsh said Sherman Brody, 46, pleaded guilty Monday to one count of first-degree course of sexual conduct against a child, a felony, before Rockland County Court Judge Kevin F. Russo.

According to Walsh, from late 2017 until April of 2021, Brody engaged in a course of sexual abuse against the girl at various locations in Haverstraw. The girl was about 7 when the abuse began, Walsh said.

Brody, who is being held at the Rockland County Jail, will be sentenced on Aug. 24. Walsh said Brody will be sentenced to 14 years in state prison, followed by 10 years of post-release supervision. Also, he will have to register as a sex offender when he is released from prison.

"Heinous crimes against children are some of the most egregious offenses in our society," Walsh said in a statement released by his office. "The plea of guilty by the defendant today is a key step as we hold him responsible for his actions. We can only hope the victim in this case can recover from these horrific crimes."

Barry Weiss, Brody's attorney, declined to make a comment on his client's behalf.
