Harford Community College trustees announce APGFCU workforce scholarship

May 16—During Harford County Community College's Board of Trustees meeting on May 10, Trustee Judy Holloway provided a report regarding the Harford Community College Foundation which announced that APGFCU established a $7,500 workforce scholarship for the upcoming 2022-23 academic year for HCC students enrolled in a certificate or trade program.

"These scholarships are intended to ease the financial burden for the students taking the programs, and hopefully taking the program leads to a better paying job," said Denise Dregier, executive director of the foundation. "We have heard from the county and local businesses that there is a demand for these types of jobs."

HCC students would apply for these scholarships as they do other trade or certificate program scholarships by emailing dreimer@harford.edu for a scholarship application.

HCC's Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1989 to provide for the educational needs of students not met through state or federal aid or other traditional sources. The foundation has $16 million in net assets.

HCC Foundation assists HCC by broadening the base of support with private donors and public agencies. Through advocacy and fundraising efforts, the foundation sustains the college with financial and personal contributions for educational programs developed by the college community and approved by the Board of Trustees.

The foundation's annual Summer Swing Golf Tournament, which raises funds for areas of greatest need at the college, is being planned for July 18 at the Maryland Golf and Country Clubs in Bel Air. Interested participants or sponsors should contact Dregier for more information.

Also, Trustee Richard Street III reported that the Finance and Audit Committee met to discuss purchases for replacement computers for Joppa Hall and a replacement alarm system.

While the college's operating budget was tracking as expected, Street said, revenue is still down due to enrollment but has been mitigated by reduced spending and other cost savings measures.
