Harbor Springs golf captures D4 regional title, Boyne City volleyball tops EJ

HARBOR SPRINGS — The Harbor Springs girls’ golf team knew that if they played up to their potential Tuesday, a state finals run would be in hand.

After 18 holes at their hosted Division 4 regional tournament at Harbor Point Golf Club in Harbor Springs, the Rams are on their way.

As the lone team under 400 on the day, Harbor Springs picked up a D4 regional championship with a 383, moving them to the state finals.

“I’m very proud of my girls,” Harbor Springs coach Pete Kelbel said. “Three Rams in the top five was extra special. We have work to do to prepare for the state championship at Grand Valley State University, but fought hard until the end. We will be back at it tomorrow, right after school.”

The Rams won’t be the only team representing the area at the D4 finals, however, as East Jordan finished third to make their way and a pair of Charlevoix golfers qualified as individuals.

The top three teams in each event advance out of the regional round, along with the top three individuals not on one of the qualifying teams.

Behind Harbor, Traverse City St. Francis placed second with a 400, then East Jordan was third with a 430. Charlevoix then just missed the cut with a 447 as a team.

Charlevoix’s Sarah Pletcher and Avery Kita each qualified for the finals, shooting 103 and 105, respectively, along with Grayling’s Jessica Campbell, who shot 97.

The individual regional champion came as Grace Slocum of St. Francis, who shot even 80. Harbor Springs’ Taylore Wilson was then second with an 84.

Also for Harbor Springs, Natalie Mills shot 96, Lily Miller, 100; Charlotte Westbrook, 103; and Savanah Maki, 107.

For East Jordan, Sami Burks placed fifth overall with a 100 and was followed by Mailey Hamilton, 108; Hannah Fortune, 110; Olivia Maher, 112; and Lila Kelly, 113.

Along with Pletcher and Kita for Charlevoix, Merette Carson shot 108; Emma Meadows, 131; and Amelia Drenth, 133.

Playing in a hosted regional and on one of the fine courses in the area, Kelbel was thankful to all those at Harbor Point that made Tuesday happen.

“We are very grateful to the Harbor Point members and outstanding staff that made this the finest regional to date,” said Kelbel.

The Division 4 state championships will take place at The Meadows of Grand Valley State on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14-15.
