What’s Happening in South Sound this week

Sunday, Aug. 14

BK5K: This running event will be at the Regional Athletic Complex at 8345 Steilacoom Road SE. The 5k will begin at 8 a.m. and the 1k will start at 9:15 a.m. Race day registration is accepted. Online registration ends on Thursday, Aug. 11.

Monday, Aug. 15

Birds and Brew: Bird watchers can meet up and share their experiences with others from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Boston Harbor Marina, 312 73rd Ave. NE in Olympia. People new to the area or unfamiliar with the South Sound will get to know more about birds here and where to see them. Visit the Black Hills Audubon webpage for more information.

Tuesday, Aug. 16

Scavenger Hunt by Puzzling Adventures: Participants just need a phone, an internet connection and way to get to and around the Capitol Campus in Olympia to complete a scavenger hunt by Puzzling Adventures. The goal is to complete the hunt as quickly as possible, but you can start at any time you’d like. The price is per team, not per person, and groups of three or four are recommended. Wednesday, Aug. 17

Summer Cruisin’ Car Parade: This Lacey Police Department Summer Cruisin’ Car Parade starts at 5:30 p.m. and is part of a three-part series of parades through Lacey neighborhoods featuring modern and classic vehicles. Special guests will be featured and there will be giveaways. The last show will be on Aug. 24.

Thursday, Aug. 18

Printmaking with Mimi Williams: Participants can learn the art of printmaking from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hands on Children’s Museum, 414 Jefferson St. NE, Olympia. Printmaking also will be available on Aug. 20 at the same time. Cost is free with admission to the museum.

Love Local Lacey Endless Summer Block Party: This ‘80s style party will be at Huntamer Park, 618 Woodland Square Loop SE in Lacey, from 5-9 p.m. There will be music and food trucks, and this party is family friendly. Dressing up for the ‘80s theme is recommended.

Family Game Night at the mall: Every Thursday in August, Capital Mall at 625 Black Lake Boulevard SW in Olympia will have a family game night in the food court area. Starting at 6 p.m. there will be games, raffles and other activities.

Friday, Aug. 19

Blue Curtain Comedy: This comedy night at Silverio’s, 114 Cherry St. in downtown Olympia, will feature host Teina Manu, Juan Forno and other comedians. It starts at 8:30 p.m. and will go to 10 p.m. Cover is $10.

Saturday, Aug. 20

Sunflower Festival at Rutledge Corn Maze: Starting on Aug. 20 and ending on Aug. 28, visitors can see the sunflowers at the Rutledge Corn Maze, 302 93rd Ave. SE in Olympia. Each ticket includes a free wagon ride to the sunflower fields, and visitors can take pictures and explore the fields once they arrive. There will be music and food vendors on site. Pricing on weekends is $25 at the gate for those 12 and older, $15 for children at the gate, or $10 for kids online and $16 for adults online. Pricing on weekdays is $20 at the gate for those 12 and up, $12 at the gate for kids, or $12 online for adults and $8 online for kids. Children 4 and under get in free.

Tumwater Artesian Brewfest: The annual brewfest is back, offering about 100 different beverages from 1-8 p.m. at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course, 4611 Tumwater Valley Drive SE. There will be food from local restaurants and vendors, as well as games such as beer pong and putt putt golf. The event is for those 21 and older. Tickets are $30 for those wanting to drink and $10 for designated drivers.

Queer Dance: This event will be at Olympia Lamplighters, 211 Fourth Ave. E. in Olympia. All ages are welcome at this event, which will run from 9 p.m. to midnight. Those who attend can dance and celebrate the queer experience. Vaccination cards are required.

Bikes, Cars & Beers Cruise-In: Northwest Harley Davidson, 8000 Freedom Lane NE in Lacey, is hosting this motorcycle and car show from noon to 6 p.m. Proceeds will go to the Gold Star Memorial Foundation in Lacey. Tickets are $30 and those who want to enter the beer garden must be over 21.

Sunday, Aug. 21

Paint and Sip Class: This Sip and Paint event will be held at Tart Hard Cider, 8024 River Drive SE Suite 303 in Olympia. Participants will be able to paint the Olympia skyline and enjoy a drink. This event starts at 6 p.m. and tickets are $40. Pre-registration is required on eventbrite.
