Hanover Area plans to decide graduation site next week

Apr. 14—Hanover Area High School will not have this year's graduation ceremony at PNC Field in Moosic or at the Garden Drive-In movie theater in Hunlock Twp., Hanover Area School District Superintendent Nathan Barrett said at Tuesday's school board meeting.

Barrett said he will announce the graduation plan at a special virtual meeting next week on the Zoom platform. Next week's Zoom meeting will be at 6 p.m. April 21.

Hanover Area's traditional graduation ceremony was nixed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The graduation event was held at the Garden Drive-In movie theater with graduates, family and friends in vehicles.

Barrett said he was hoping the high school could use PNC Field for this year's graduation, but the New York Yankees became an obstacle. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders is the Yankees' AAA farm team.

PNC Field would allow more socially distanced guests to attend the graduation ceremony than the high school football stadium, gym or auditorium.

Barrett also said he would provide information at next week's Zoom meeting on summer programs to help students who suffered learning losses due to the pandemic.

Barrett announced a new apprentice training program next school year that will involve trade union cooperation. He said it will be the first program of its kind in the state.

The board approved an $18,000 contract for 2021-22 school year with MLB Informational Services LLC for computer data services. Barrett will not supervise contract services because his wife, Megan Barrett, has an ownership interest in the company.

The company's service proposal was one of four received in response to an advertised solicitation, and the district determined it was the best of the four, according to the motion on the meeting agenda. Tuesday's school board meeting was streamed on Zoom.
