Hallowed grounds

Dec. 9—Many Santa Feans pass landmarks such as the Roundhouse and Cross of the Martyrs without much thought, given that history is baked into the city's landscape. Until 1954, the governor's residence, in the form of the Palace of the Governors, was yet another prominent feature unique to the capital. The residence moved to 1 Mansion Dr., tucked away about a mile and a half north of the Plaza.

The best ways to see it are tours and open houses, and one of the latter is planned for Tuesday, Dec. 13. Among the sights to see inside the more than 7,000-square-foot structure are pieces of art culled from the collections at the state's museums. Artwork evolves as administrations change, says Doug Beck, head docent and board member with the New Mexico Governor's Mansion Foundation. The open house covers all public areas of the mansion, Beck says, and is held in December to highlight the mansion's holiday decorations.
