H.S. softball: NFA rallies from 9-1 deficit to edge Montville

Apr. 14—MONTVILLE — Norwich Free Academy rallied from a 9-1 deficit, scoring eight runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to beat Montville, 11-9, in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I softball game on Tuesday.

Senior Tessa Hospod helped spark the comeback with two hits and an RBI for the Wildcats (2-1, 1-0). Junior Morgan Tainter reached base five times, chipping two singles and a double, while freshman Melina Graziano added two hits and three RBI.

Jillian Murallo led the Indians (0-2, 0-2) with two doubles while Brooke Taylor had a single and double and Taryn Feragne had a triple.

In other games:

— Maddie Southers had four hits, including a home run, and scored three runs to lift Fitch past Bacon Academy, 9-3, in ECC Division I action. Gabby Amaral had two RBI and Grace Jenkins belted a three-run homer in the sixth inning for the Falcons (2-0, 2-0). Jazlyn Small-Yu had two hits, including a three-run homer, for the Bobcats (0-2, 0-2).

— Anna Dziecinny slugged two home runs and had three RBI and also struck out nine and allowed just one hit as the winning pitcher in Waterford's 22-1 win over New London in ECC Division I. Maddie Burrows had two doubles, a home run and four RBI while Emilia Podeszwa had a home run and scored four runs and Tori Kiefer added two hits and three RBI for the Lancers (2-0, 2-0). Cassandra Roman had a solo home run for the Whalers (0-2, 0-2).

— Addie Hauptmann had a home run and went 5-for-5 overall with five RBI to power Wheeler past Putnam, 20-3, in an ECC Division II game. Winning pitcher Reese Main also had five hits and five RBI while Maddie and Marissa Perkins each had three hits and two RBI for the Lions (2-0, 2-0).

— Griswold jumped out to a 10-0 lead and went on to beat Lyman Memorial, 18-4, in ECC Division II. Makayla Nelson had two hits and four RBI and Mandy Brehler had two hits and two RBI for the Wolverines (2-0, 2-0). Kayla Goins had two of Lyman's four hits overall. The Bulldogs fell to 1-1, 1-1.
