H.S. soccer: Martinez leads red-hot Abilene High girls past Lubbock High

Justine Martinez scored four goals to lead Abilene High past Lubbock High 9-1 in a District 4-5A girls soccer game Tuesday at the Shotwell Annex.

Laila Brown had two goals and an assist, while Rheauna De La Garza, Zoe Castro and Leah Flores each had goals for AHS (8-1-1 overall, 4-0 district).

Marin Murray and Castro had two assists each.

Trinity Escobar had five saves for the Lady Eagles.

“We battled through the cold, wind and rain,” first-year AHS coach Tiffany Van Hoose said. “Thankful for both our team and Lubbock High that no injuries occurred on the turf. We celebrate and move on to a big match against Coronado on Friday.”

The Lady Eagles play Coronado (7-6-2, 2-1) at 5 p.m. Friday in Lubbock. The Lady Mustangs beat Lubbock-Cooper 2-0 on Tuesday.

Monterey quiets Wylie

Lubbock Monterey blanked Wylie 6-0 in a District 4-5A game at Sandifer Stadium.

Avery Anders had nine saves in the loss for the Lady Bulldogs (4-8-3, 1-2), who take on Lubbock High at 5 p.m. Friday.

“We fought hard, and we didn’t give up,” Wylie coach Maddie Martin said. “I’m proud of us for that. We just need to have a short memory and focus on the next one.”

Plainsmen top Bulldogs

At Lubbock, three Lubbock Monterey players scored goals in a 3-0 victory over Wylie in a District 4-5A game.

Jarrius Johns, Xzavier Orellana and Miguel Robledo each had goals for Monterey (12-0-2, 4-0).

Two players – Nathan Valdez and Rasor Reese – combined on the shutout for the Plainsmen.

Wylie (6-7-1, 1-2) plays at Lubbock High on Friday.

Eagles beat Westerners

At Lubbock, Austin Wood scored twice as Abilene High beat Lubbock High 3-1 in a District 4-5A game.

Trey Hall also scored for AHS, which battled back from a 1-0 deficit.

The Eagles (4-6-4, 3-1) are back home for Lubbock Coronado (2-10-1, 0-3) at 7 p.m. Friday at the Shotwell Annex.
