H.S. Roundup: State-ranked Berne Union girls suffer first loss of the season

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Zanesville Rosecrans 35, Berne Union 30: The Rockets, ranked No. 5 in the state in the Division IV Associated Press poll, were upset by the Bishops in Mid-State League-Cardinal Division play.

Rosecrans (7-2, 4-1) took a 9-4 first-quarter lead and led 13-10 at halftime and then outscored the Rockets 22-20 in the second half to hold on for the win.

Sophia Kline led Berne Union (9-1, 6-1) with 15 points and Abbi Evans added 11.

Fairfield Union 54, Liberty Union 34: The Falcons (15-1, 9-0) took a 28-18 halftime lead and steadily pulled away in the second half in their Mid-State League-Buckeye Division win over the visiting Lions (3-10, 3-6).

Hannah Rauch and Elly Lewis led the Falcons with 11 points each and Claire Cooperider added seven.

Delaney Peck and Ella Brown led the Lions with nine points each.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fairfield Union 53, Washington Court House 47: Trailing 20-18 at halftime, the Falcons used a strong second half to pull out a non-conference win over the Blue Lions.

Brennan Rowles led a balanced attack with 14 points, Caleb Redding finished with 10, Caleb Schmelzer had nine and Isaac Schmelzer added eight points.

Amanda-Clearcreek 61, Nelsonville-York 48: The Aces went on the road and pulled out a non-conference win over the Buckeyes.

Clayton Rhyne led the Aces with 16 points and Tucker Shamblin added 15.

SWIMMING

Lancaster competes in Northeast Classic Invitational: The Golden Gales participated in the prestigious Northeast Classic Swimming Invitational in Canton where swimmers had to meet a time standard to be invited to participate in the meet held at the C.T. Branin Natatorium, site of the OHSAA State Championships.

The Lancaster girls team finished 23rd out of 43 teams participating, and the boys finished 35th out of 45 teams. Mia Hensley finished eighth out of 71 swimmers competing in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.92 seconds. She also finished eighth out of 64 swimmers in the 200-yard medley in a time of 2:09.79.

Jack Hensley finished ninth out of 54 swimmers in the 200-yard Individual Medley in a time of 1:59.91. He then finished 24th out of 78 swimmers with a time of 1:02.20 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
