H.S. Roundup: Lancaster, Fairfield Union battle to a 2-2 tie

GIRLS SOCCER

Lancaster 2, Fairfield Union 2: The Lady Gales opened the season by hosting the Falcons as part of the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Futbol Friday Night.

The game had all the drama of a late-season thriller rather than an opening game of the season. The first 15 minutes of the game was a back-and-forth midfield battle and neither team was able to create clear-cut scoring opportunities.

With 21:00 left in the first half, a Lancaster defender was called for a handball just outside the box. Kylie McMahon stepped up and took the direct kick and she was able to bend the shot over the Lancaster wall and find the back of the net to put the Falcons up 1-0.

Fairfield Union was able to hold the lead for eight minutes. Lancaster created several corner kick opportunities to pressure the Fairfield Union defense, and with 13:00 left in the half, Olivia George took a corner that found Lily Palmer's head and scored the tying goal.

The second half opened with action that increased the intensity of the game. Fairfield Union took a long throw two minutes into the half that a Lancaster defender headed away over a Fairfield Union attacker. The Falcon attacker went down injured, and the officials held a conference to discuss the play. The officials then determined a penalty was committed and awarded a penalty kick to the Falcons, and Hannah George scored the penalty kick to put Fairfield Union up 2-1.

With 10:00 to play Lancaster pulled a defender off and added an attacker to the field. The Lady Gales were able to create some chances but did not find the goal. With two minutes left in the game, Lancaster was awarded a kick from just outside of the penalty box.

Addison Westbrooks took a long shot that Falcon goalie Isabella Neal was able to block to her left. The ball remained in play and a Lancaster attacker was able to take a close shot that Neal saved with the rebound falling in front of her goal. Another Lancaster attacker and Falcon defender crashed into each other fighting for the rebound. The Falcon defender got to the ball first, but the kick went back into their own goal with 1:52 to play in the game, which tied the game at 2-2.

Neal had six saves for Fairfield Union and Avery Westbrooks recorded three saves for Lancaster.
