H.S. roundup: Helme helps Ledyard girls to easy track and field win

May 9—LEDYARD — Nadia Helme won three events and was joined Aniya Pearson, Jessica Vajdos and Teia Lee on the winning 4x100-meter relay team (52.4 seconds) as Ledyard defeated New London 111-36 on Saturday morning in a girls' track and field meet.

Helme won the long jump (16 feet, 1.5 inches), triple jump (31-1) and 100 dash (13.3) for the Colonels (2-3), who also picked up two wins apiece from Natalie Poulton (shot put, 35-1.5 and discus, 98-3) and Ciara May McGrath (3,200, 13:41.7 and high jump, 4-8). Kmara Royster won the 300 hurdles (52.6) for the Whalers (0-5) and joined Daisha Thomas, Akheena Parcak and Annisah White on the winning 4x400 relay (4:22.6).

— Montville swept a tri-meet, defeating Putnam 103-8 in ECC Division III and Waterford 95-36. Kylah Bilheimer won the 100 dash (13.9) and 200 (28.7) for the Indians (5-1, 4-0) and joined Katelyn Plikus, Sam Kuruchi and Keira MacCracken on the winning 4x400 relay team (4:34.7). Plikus added wins in the 100 hurdles (17.1) and 300 hurdles (52.0), Kelsey Chiasson won the discus (75-3) and high jump (4-6) and Sage Gressly won the 1,600 (6:01) and 800 (2:47). Sarah Johnson won the 3,200 and Kate Lange the javelin for the Lancers (1-2-1) and joined by Avery Pepin, Sophie Marcille on the winning 4x800 relay.

— Bacon Academy had three double-winners during a 96-44 win over Plainfield in an ECC Division II meet. Meghan Purcell won the 100 hurdles (18.3) and 300 hurdles (52.6), Jordan Malloy captured the 800 (2:30.2) and 1,600 (5:33), and Sarah Vilardo won the 100 (13.4) and 200 (26.8) for the Bobcats (3-2, 2-1).

Boys' track and field

— Mitchell Ahlborn was a triple winner as Ledyard defeated New London 99-42. Ahlborn won the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches), long jump (18-1) and triple jump (36-7) for the Colonels (2-3). Ali Harkness won the 100-meter dash (11.6 seconds) and 300 hurdles (44.2) for the Whalers (1-4) while Marquis Whyte won the 110 hurdles (16.7) and 800 (2:00.6) and Daniel Duperval won the shot put (44-6) and discus (131-10).

— Montville lost a tri-meet at home, losing to Waterford 123-33 and Putnam 48-47 in an ECC Division III meet. Evan Childs won the shot put and discus for the Lancers (1-3) while Nolan Gollsneider won the 300 hurdles and was part of the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. Ranju Iyer won the 3,200 (10:43 for the Indians (1-5, 1-3) and Kanye McClellan captured the triple jump.

— Jake Martino won the 100 (11.4), discus (132-10.25), shot put (33-5.5) and javelin (120-11) to highlight Bacon Academy's 120-27 win over Plainfield in an ECC Division II meet. Peyton Adams added wins in the long jump (19-3), 200 (24.3) and 400 (52.9) for the Bobcats (3-2, 2-1).

Boys' tennis

— Sujesh Kurumbail avenged a loss earlier in the week Tucker Callahan as East Lyme remained unbeaten with a 7-0 victory over Stonington. Kurumbail won the rematch 7-5, 7-6 (5) for the Vikings (9-0, 8-0), who also picked up singles wins from Daniel Sapozhnikov, Jiarui Peng and Benji Tan, along with doubles wins from Guillem Colom-Rohan Purohit, Rohun Veerappa-Boopathy-Aditya Kabra and David Chung-Riley Walsh. Stonington is 7-2, 5-2.

— David Baukus won his No. 1 singles match in three sets to highlight Montville's 7-0 victory over Waterford. Brendan Duhamal and Jack Giurleo also won singles matches for the Indians (6-1), who swept the doubles with wins by Ethan Thomas-Matt Malbaurn, Jae Seung Kim-Jason Zhong and Aiden Meisliter-Adam Smith.

Girls' tennis

— Shoreline Conference champion Old Lyme remained unbeaten (11-0) with a 7-0 victory over Haddam-Killingworth. Abigail Sicuranza, Callie Bass, Sam Tan and Livie Bass were straight-set winners in singles as were the doubles teams of Lauren Wallace-Alexis Fenton, Sophia Ortoleva-Elaina Morosky and Aggie Hunt-Beatrice Hunt.

Boys' lacrosse

— Kellen Paparella had three goals and four assists to lead Bacon Academy to a 14-3 victory over Norwich Free Academy. Jason Consiglio added three goals for the Bobcats (9-1) while Tyler Graham had a goal and four assists, Jack Holmes and Gavin Emmons each scored twice, and Sam Blumberger had one goal and one assist. Anthony Ballestrini scored twice for the Wildcats (4-5), Quinn Perkins had three assists, Logan Jenkins added a goal and goalie Sam Sweeney made 15 saves.

Girls' lacrosse

— Maddie Gould and Lily Tomczik scored three goals each as Montville defeated New London 11-5 in an ECC Division II game. Lindsey Beavan and Belle Leifheit added two goals apiece for the Indians (7-2, 5-1), Maddie Konig had two assists, Regan Buscetto one goal and goalie Madeline Horkey made seven saves. Emilia Skrabacz scored four goals and Aislinn Strecker one for the Whalers (2-8, 2-8).
