H.S. roundup: East Lyme qualifies for state baseball tournament

May 19—OLD LYME — Julian Baez earned his first varsity pitching victory as East Lyme qualified for the state tournament with a 7-2 nonleague baseball victory over Old Lyme on Wednesday.

Baez allowed just six hits over 6.2 innings and struck out seven for the Vikings (8-9).

Gavin O'Brien led the offense, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBI and a run scored, while Connor Tukey added a double, triple, two runs and one RBI.

Grady Lacourciere had a double and triple for the Wildcats (9-10) while Jimmy Creagan added a pair of hits.

In other games:

— Ethan Chavez pitched a complete-game shutout and Kolby Quinn hit a three-run homer to highlight St. Bernard's 11-0 non-league win over Westbrook. Joe Basso had a single and triple and scored three runs for the Saints (9-9) and Bryce Morrissette had a double, two RBI and two runs.

Boys' tennis

— Fitch edged Ledyard 4-3, its second 4-3 win over the Colonels this season. Will Albrikes and Andres Sardar won singles matches and Ryan Mignosa-Michael McBride and Calvin Lupo-Nick Sousa doubles matches for the Falcons (9-3). Damion DePaul and Sebastian Fieldsend were singles winner for the Colonels (9-5) as was the doubles team of Ronan Allison-Benjamin Fieldsend.

— Tucker Callahan and Chase Donnarummo were 6-0, 6-0 singles winners during Stonington's 6-1 win over New London. Peter Schoenecker also won his singles match for the Bears (11-4), as did the doubles teams of Conrad Tobiassen-Joshua Lord, Peter Previty-Brett Caron and Ben Mahoney-Alex Miles. Benny Thompson won his No. 4 singles match by forfeit for the Whalers (0-13-2).

Girls' tennis

— Maddie Gonzalez overcame an early 4-2 to deficit to win her No. 3 singles match 7-6, 6-3 as Stonington defeated Guilford 6-1 in a nonleague match. Maddie Hamm and Grace Duggan also won singles matches for the Bears (14-1), who swept the doubles with wins from Katie Johnstone-Katya Snegovskikh, Emily Fulling-Erin Motherway and Marcella Hamm-Lauren Buckley.

Boys' track and field

— Phoenix Garza won three events as Stonington completed a perfect regular season with a 120-28 win over Lyman Memorial. Garza won the 110-meter hurdles (16.2 seconds), high jump (5 feet, 6 inches) and long jump (18-5) for the Bears (5-0), while Josh Mooney captured the 200 (23.9) and 400 (53.4) and Steven Wilk the 300 hurdles (44.9) and triple jump (37-5). Thomas Cardinali won the 100 dash (11.3) for the Bulldogs (6-1).

Girls' track and field

— Nancy Inthasit, Addison Labbe and Phoebe Werling won two individual events apiece as Stonington beat Lyman Memorial 82-67 in a battle of unbeatens. Inthasit won the 100 (12.4) and 200 (26.3), Labbe the 1,600 (6:29.2) and 3,200 (12:27.5) and Werling the discus (87-2) and javelin (98-5) for the Bears (5-0). Gabriela Dinisoe won the 100 hurdles (18.1) and pole vault (9-0) for the Bulldogs (6-1) and Kristen Goodrich added wins in the high jump (4-10) and triple jump (32-8).

Boys' lacrosse

— John Zimmermann had three goals and an assist as Waterford beat East Lyme 10-9 in an ECC Division I game on Tuesday night. The win gives the Lancers (12-3, 7-1) a half-game lead over East Lyme (10-5, 6-1) in the division. The Vikings, however, will win the division if they beat Woodstock on Thursday to finish 7-1 because they own the league tiebreaker, going 2-0 in mandated crossover games while Waterford was 1-1.

C.J. Landry, Aiden Bousquet and Terrance Silva each scored twice, Jake Kozlowski made 13 saves and Jackson Huta had a goal and an assist for Waterford. Sawyer Tighe scored four goals, Drew Sager had two goals and two assists, Anthony Gesino had two goals and an assist, Sean McCusker had a goal and two assists, Mason Gallo made five saves and Dave Stoddard and Jack Keating each had an assist for East Lyme.

Boys' golf

— Montville improved to 13-1 with a 6.5-.5 win over Wheeler at Norwich Golf Course. Four players shared medalist honors, all shooting 40, including Morgun Whittaker, Cameron DeCecco and Tyler Radford of Montville, and Kieran Boscoe of Wheeler (7-5).

— Connor Tuttle and Ryan Claffey shared medalist honors, each shooting 41, during Bacon Academy's 7-0 win over Griswold. Chris Stevenson added a 42 and Wilson Hathaway a 43 for the Bobcats (4-7). Griswold is 2-9.

— Unbeaten Killingly clinched the ECC Division II title with a 7-0 victory over Waterford. Killingly (11-0, 5-0) also blanked East Lyme and Tourtellotte 7-0 behind medalist Harrison Giambattista's 38. Jacob Beardsley and Zach Beardsley each shot 45 for the Lancers (9-6, 3-3) while Jack Bucko led the Vikings (6-7) with a 42.

— Medalist Jack Kramer (39), Nate McCormack and Jack Nystrom won their matches as Fitch defeated NFA 5-2 in an ECC Division I match. The Falcons are 5-7, 1-4. Nick Wigfield and Liam O'Neil won their matches for the Wildcats (6-7, 3-2).

— Nathan Sylvestre earned medalist honors with a 43 as Grasso Tech defeated Wilcox Tech 178-189 in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Nolan Blewitt added a 44 for the Eagles (6-9) while Gabriel Desrosiers-Barry shot a 45 and Lucas Iglesias a 46.

Girls' golf

— Bacon Academy's Gianna Duckworth earned medalist honors with a 47 as the Bobcats split an ECC tri-match with host Woodstock and Waterford. Woodstock won with a 212 total while Bacon (4-6, 2-5) finished at 241 and the Lancers (1-5, 1-5) finished at 260.

— NFA remained unbeaten with a 214-242 win over Hand on Tuesday. Keira Kotula of NFA (8-0-1) was the medalist.
