H.S. basketball roundup: Merchant leads Griswold past Windham

Feb. 25—GRISWOLD — Sophomore Evan Merchant scored 20 points, leading Griswold to a 58-36 win over Windham in an Eastern Connecticut Conference North Division boys' basketball game on Wednesday night.

Jacob Strain, also a sophomore, had 16 points and five rebounds for Griswsold (2-2) and Merchant had five rebounds and three steals.

Devin Marquez led Windham (1-2) with 20 points.

In other games:

— Lyman Memorial picked up its first victory of the season, beating Tourtellotte 30-27 in an ECC North Division game. Jaiden Lopez and Connor Chapman scored nine points each for Lyman (1-2).

— Loudon Chupas scored 23 points to lead Hale-Ray to a 57-42 win over Old Lyme in a Shoreline Conference game. Nick Cox had 15 points and Maverick Swaney scored 13 for Old Lyme (2-2).

— Grasso Tech fell to 3-3 with a 92-66 loss to Windham Tech in a Connecticut Technical Conference East Division game.

— Ledyard earned its first victory on Tuesday night in dramatic fashion with a 57-56 overtime victory Norwich Free Academy in the ECC South. Dorell Cagle scored the go-ahead basket with 20 seconds to play in overtime for the Colonels (1-3), who survived as the Wildcats (2-2) missed a shot with 1.2 seconds remaining and Connor Keefe secured the rebound.

Jabari Jones had a double-double — 15 points and 11 rebounds — to lead Ledyard while Cagle finished with 13 and Austin Chapman had 12. Jared Martin made four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points for NFA while Ryan Outlow had 12 and Tyler Spruill 11. The game was tied at 49-49 after regulation.

Girls' basketball

— Windham outscored Griswold 21-0 in the first quarter and went on to beat Griswold 46-27 in an ECC North Division game. Adalyse Gonzalez scored 13 of her 20 points in the first quarter and Hailey Cruz had nine rebounds and four assists for Windham. Abigail Wing scored 10 points and had five rebounds and Sonja Matheson had nine rebounds for Griswold (0-4).
