A guide to Fort Worth’s spookiest neighborhoods for families to go trick-or-treating

With the start of spooky season, kids will soon be dressing up as their favorite characters, overloading their pumpkins with all the candy they can find and getting a sugar high as soon as they get home.

Dallas-Fort Worth is one of the best areas to celebrate Halloween, per Opendoor, based on housing density and the number of child residents under 10 years old. That means kids can get more treats in less steps.

Along with door-to-door trick-or-treating, many local organizations have organized special events. These are some of the best Fort Worth neighborhoods to trick-or-treat in and fun events to pick up candy at.

Best Fort Worth neighborhoods to trick-or-treat in

  • Monticello: This neighborhood hosts Halloween festivities every year. While your family trick-or-treats there, be sure to stop by the annual Halloween party and enjoy a parade, games and tons of sweets. Visit facebook.com/MonticelloFW for more information.

  • Villages of Sunset Pointe: This Fort Worth neighborhood, winner of the 2012 Fort Worth Pride Award, is known for its candy collection and its spooky spirit. It’s holding a Halloween decorating contest this year, so be ready for some frightening displays if you hunt for candy there.

  • Ryan Place: The southside Fort Worth neighborhood takes holidays seriously. Last year, Halloween crowds were so large that they required the closure of Elizabeth Boulevard. The annual “Boo on the Boulevard” event features a costume contest, face painting, games and arts and crafts.

  • Ridglea Hills: If you’re ready for a frighteningly good time, Ridglea Hills is the perfect place to spend the holiday. The neighborhood hosts a “Halloween in the Hills” block party and other seasonal events for families.

  • Fairmount: Halloween is an important time for Fairmount residents. This neighborhood has great trick-or-treating opportunities, along with events like a scavenger hunt, house decorating contest and costume contest.

Best trick-or-treat events in Fort Worth

  • Fort Worth Zoo: “Boo at the Zoo” is one of the most popular events this time of year. Held Oct. 28 to 30, the event features treat stations, themed entertainment and animal shows. It’s free with zoo admission or membership.

  • Fort Worth Museum of Science and History: Head to the museum for creepy-crawly fun at the annual “Ick-or-Treat” event on Halloween day. Families wear costumes, complete a scavenger hunt to win treats and partake in Halloween-themed arts and crafts.

  • Fort Worth Aviation Museum: Celebrate Halloween at the Fort Worth Aviation Museum on Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wear a costume to get free admission, and bring a treat bag to fill up at the candy stations.

  • ACH Child and Family Services: On Oct. 27 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., the nonprofit will be hosting a trunk-or-treat. Kids trick-or-treat their way from one decorated car trunk to another. They’ll meet entertainers dressed as their favorite superheroes, play carnival games, enjoy music, and munch on a variety of goodies from food trucks and drink stands.

  • Medical City Alliance: On Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the hospital will be hosting a “spooktacular” event with a costume contest and trick-or-treating. For entry, bring two non-perishable food items for local food shelters.

  • Southwest Regional Library: Enjoy festive Halloween activities in a family-friendly atmosphere at this local library. The “Spooktacular Party” will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 31.
