The driver of a car that plunged 250 feet (76 meters) off a treacherous cliff in northern California, injuring his two young children and his wife, was released from the hospital and jailed on suspicion of attempted murder and child abuse, authorities said Friday. Dharmesh A. Patel, 41, was booked into jail where he was being held without bail and could be arraigned Monday afternoon if the San Mateo District Attorney's Office decides to file criminal charges, that office said. The Pasadena man was seriously injured when the Tesla sedan went over the cliff at Devils Slide, along the Pacific Coast Highway on Jan. 2.
Mexico's government will provide more support to state oil company Pemex with a plan to ensure that pending bond payments due this year are met, the president said, underscoring one of the leftist's top political priorities. Pemex's debt obligations are being paid on time with the government's assistance, and the finance ministry and Pemex's leadership are working out the schedule for this year's payments, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said at a news conference. The government will continue to reduce the tax burden on Pemex, alongside other measures, Lopez Obrador said, noting that the ministry would explain soon how debt payments would be met.

Monterey Park, California, the site of Saturday’s mass shooting that left 11 dead, has historically served as a beacon for California’s Chinese community. In the 1970s, Chinese real estate developer Fred Hsieh envisioned Monterey Park as the “Chinese Beverly Hills,” purchasing and selling land in the area to house the rapid influx of immigrants flowing in from Taiwan and Hong Kong. “He told us the reason why he was buying up so much property in town was that Monterey Park was going to become the next Chinatown,” Harold Fiebelkorn, a former member of the city’s Planning Commission, told the Los Angeles Times.
