Grand Forks Central's Carter Elde wins both state hurdle titles

May 29—BISMARCK — Grand Forks Central senior Carter Elde already had one state championship to his name Saturday but had a chip on his shoulder to start the 110 hurdles.

Elde had already won the 300 hurdles in 38.94 seconds, a time he wasn't exactly pleased with despite its first-place honors.

Then, he was chased down in the 400 meters and finished second by .11 seconds.

Elde used that frustration to finish the meet with two more big performances, winning the 110 hurdles and helping the Knights to a fourth-place 4x400 finish.

"After that race (400 meters), I was fired up," Elde said. "I was mad at that performance. Then the 110 performance, I had a big (personal record) and won that title. The 4x400, I give it my all. The team placed fourth, and I couldn't be more happy. It was a great day."

The two state hurdle titles are the first two state championships for Elde, who has signed a letter of intent to compete at North Dakota State.

Central coach Sean Allan was impressed with Elde's busy day.

"He went out and competed hard," Allan said. "The better the competition, the better he competes."

Elde ran his personal-best in both the 400 meters and 110 hurdles. He anchored the 4x400 relay, which ran the second-fastest time in school history.

Elde led Central to a sixth-place team finish.

In addition to Elde on Saturday, the Knights were highlighted by Angel Lopez's third-place finish in the high jump.

The Red River boys finished eighth as a team with 44 points. The Riders scored just 15 points last year.

The Riders were paced by a second-place finish from Lukas Heydt in the 300 hurdles and a second-place finish from Logan Arason in the javelin.

Red River senior Simon Haug entered the state triple jump with the event's worst performance — a No. 27 ranking.

But Haug, who didn't qualify for state until EDC and only did it by place and not by distance, finished the state meet in sixth place.

The Red River girls took home two places in the 800, with Jocelyn Schiller taking third and Lauren Dosch taking seventh.
