When country singers Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde stepped on stage Sunday evening to accept a Grammy Award, they made history.

Pearce and McBryde won Best Country Duo/Group Performance for chart-topping duet "Never Wanted To Be That Girl," becoming the first pairing of women to earn the honor since it debuted in 2012. The song appears on Pearce's standout 2021 album, "29: Written In Stone."

It marks the first Grammy Award win for Pearce and McBryde, respectively; the Recording Academy rewarded the singers during the pre-telecast "Premiere Ceremony" on Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles.

"I always loved Ashley's music and just was a fan. I asked her if she'd write a song with me," Pearce told reporters backstage. She added: "To see this song do what it's over the last year and a half for us and just continue to show the girls coming up behind us that you can write your truth and you can do everything that you want in this business, I feel very, very lucky."

And McBryde could finish the night with another Grammy Award. She competes for Best Country Album during the primetime broadcast; McBryde earned the nomination for her small-town concept album "Lindieville."
