Aug. 18—Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a state of emergency for Rio Arriba County following monsoon-driven flooding that poses dangers to the public and area facilities.

The executive order provides $750,000 for the state Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management to assist the county with emergency measures, help prevent additional damage, repair infrastructure and lessen the overall recovery time, according to a news release the Governor's Office issued Wednesday.

"This declaration is appreciated by Rio Arriba County and the residents of Rio Arriba County — it will provide much-needed relief for local infrastructure and to the acequias that were damaged by flooding," Rio Arriba County Manager Alfredo Montoya said in the news release.

This has been a year for fires, flooding and destruction for much of New Mexico. Earlier this summer Lujan Grisham requested additional flood impact coverage from President Joe Biden, who approved the request for a presidential disaster declaration in May after the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire.
