At least 19 students and two teachers were killed and multiple others injured after a mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, on Tuesday.

The shooter walked into Robb Elementary School in Uvalde around noon Central time and opened fire with a handgun. The shooter was killed by responding police, Gov. Greg Abbott said.

Uvalde is a city of about 16,000 people about 85 miles west of San Antonio. The shooting came four years after a gunman fatally shot 10 people at Santa Fe High School in the Houston area.

Elected officials and celebrities took to social media following the shooting to offer prayers and messages of support.
