What got Rao’s soup recalled in Florida, California, Texas, New York and 29 other states?

There’s an obvious problem with less obvious potential consequences that caused Sovos Brands Intermediate to recall Rao’s Made for Home Slow Simmered Soup, Chicken & Gnocchi in 32 states.

Labels on the recalled 16-ounce jars say they should have Chicken & Gnocchi soup, a greenish-white soup. Instead, they contain Vegetable Minestrone soup, which is dark red.

A mild annoyance for most people. But, the minestrone has egg and the Chicken & Gnocchi doesn’t. So, the label doesn’t include egg, making it an undeclared allergen.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to egg run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product,” the Sovos-written, FDA-posted recall notice states.
