GM Is 'Not Even Close' to Keeping Up With C8 Corvette Demand

General Motors is in an odd place with the C8 Corvette, a massive hit that has been plagued by production delays since it was introduced. With demand spiking and supply dwindling, it's no surprise the company is selling cars faster than it can make them. GM, apparently, recognizes this is a significant issue, and is preparing to remedy it.

While he would not offer any specific order or production numbers, Chevrolet marketing executive Tony Johnson recently told GM Authority that, as it stands, the company is "not even close" to keeping up with demand for their newly-reconfigured sports car. The Corvette is consistently among America's fastest-selling cars and COVID-related issues are still disrupting the production process, which means the company now has what Johnson describes as "more orders than we can handle."

While he offered no specifics, Johnson did say that the company was working on a solution. GM has a relatively short window to greatly increase production while the C8 is still seen as new, and, if it succeeds, the current unintentional scarcity could actually become an effective promotional tactic for what the company hopes will eventually become a fairly high-production sports car.

First, though, they actually have to meet that demand. Last year's total production of 20,368 cars lagged significantly behind all but one year of C7 production, yet the car's actual sales figures increased 20 percent year-on-year from 2019. If General Motors can increase its supply quick enough, the C8 Corvette may become as ubiquitous as the seemingly eternal C3.
